Damaged ROM on my R lens.

The ROM on one of my R lenses is bent up a bit (not sure what happened) but the lens appears to be fine and I don't need the information from the camera. Can I unscrew the 2 screws that attaches it to the lens barrel without any surprises? Hate to send it to Solms or NJ if I can carefully unscrew it myself.

Anyone ever tried to remove one? Could I remove the ROM from one lens that I use less often and attach it easily to another? Thanks

The ROM contacts typically are connected by a ribbon cable to a chip deeper in the lens. Removing the 2 screws that attach the ROM contacts to the lens won't make anything go 'sproing!' but it might not be as useful as you'd hoped.

The ROM chip is programmed for the particular lens so I wouldn't try swapping from one lens to another.

It depends on the lens. Most of the primes and early zooms with ROM are just a chip screwed to the mount.

As Doug mentioned, the ROM is mounted and then programmed by Leica. You can see two holes where they connect to do the programming.

The Leitax site is a good reference, as they mention which lenses have the ribbon cables.
