charlesphoto99 Posted March 18, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted March 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Okay, even though my M8 isn't arriving until Tuesday, my wonderful girlfriend has gotten swept up in my hysteria over the M8 and, bless her heart, wanted to be a part of it and offered to buy me some accessories. So we went off to my local dealer today and picked up a grip and some memory cards. Nice huh? She balked at first at the size to price ratio of the grip but then recalled a pair of shoes for more. We explained to her about the red dot and I assured her the grip would last much longer than the shoes. She also played with it and agreed it to be essential for handling. Â So here's my beef with Leica. I go to peel the plastic off the bottom of the grip (hey, I've got to play with something till Tuesday) and lo and behold the sticker with all the company symbols is strongly glued to the bottom. I managed to get it off with some elbow grease and some solvent made for removing stickers though it left a faint outline. Strange - I wouldn't expect Leica to try and make a product look like a PC Notebook (uh vs a Mac Powerbook?) I just knew I had to take that sticker off though because it would bug me everytime I changed cards or batteries (I also tape over the logos). Â What were they thinking, esp considering the price of the grip? Anyone else find this strange?
mike prevette Posted March 18, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted March 18, 2007 Well I'm a logo taper as well, but I'm afraid the sticker is supposed to stay on in order to keep the baseplate from getting all scratched up. I was tempted to rip it off as well, but decided to leave it to see how much wear it could take. So far the damn thing hasn't changed a bit. Â Â (ps. It's good to see you on here. We've spoken a couple times around Seattle, I shot some video on a Adidas shoot with you a couple years ago.) _mike
charlesphoto99 Posted March 18, 2007 Author Share #3 Â Posted March 18, 2007 Hi Mike, Â Yeah, that was a fun shoot. Cool to see that you've got an M8. Â Umm, I was afraid that's why the sticker was there. Well, the deed is done so I guess my bottom plate will get scuffed like all my other Leicas have. Have to say it looks much better without. A minor thing.
35mmSummicron Posted March 18, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted March 18, 2007 i don't have the grip (i'm with the train of thought that a leica should be bare of accessories) but i had a lot of difficulties trying to remove the plastic cover and then the electronic sticker from the baseplate. it was ugly as hell even though it was at the bottom--it HAD to go, scuffs or no scuffs. Â ps. i too am a logo taper. my M8 is black as night
marknorton Posted March 18, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted March 18, 2007 It's all down to the regulatory nonsense which includes, for example, the need to put the waste bin symbol with a cross through it on any product containing a circuit board, effectively advising you not to throw your Leica M8 in the trash. Â What is surprising is that with a mobile phone, the symbols can be behind a battery cover, but not apparently on a Leica. Â Buy a bag of - say - walnuts here and the packaging regulations make them add: Â "Warning: this package may contain nuts" Â It's madness.

stunsworth Posted March 18, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted March 18, 2007 Robert, the mains lead to one of my electrical appliances had similar text refering to California and the cancerous properties of the lead - perhaps it only affects Californians <grin> Â I noticed the other week that sushi in Sainsbury's ( a large UK supermaket chain) now has a sticker on the box warning purchasers that 'this product contains raw fish'. Â Well, gee, if we can't throw it in the trash, where can we throw it? I know: I'll start a Leica M8 recycling center. Â I started a similar thread over on rff.com and the mob is about evenly divided on the peel/no peel subject. Â I just fitted a Pelican case around my M8 and the act of plucking out the superflous foam was about as anal I am prepared to be today. I don't like the sticker, but that will have to wait for another time. Â Philip
