bill Posted November 20, 2012 Share #21 Posted November 20, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) ... My understanding is that Leica will, on request, upgrade any older M7 to the new optical-DX reader for free. They did mine. And gave it a quick CLA into the bargain. Batteries do last forever; I carried a spare set in the base of an Abrahamsson Rapidgrip, wrapped in a piece of paper with the date of last change (and my phone number). The longest I went between changes was just over two years and then it was only because I felt I should. I had one of the first .85s into this country and it had the battery drain problem but was promptly swapped out by Leica UK. I never had a flare problem; I have a recent MP4 .85 now and ran the two side by side and could never make one flare and the other not. andybarton Posted November 20, 2012 Share #22 Posted November 20, 2012 My understanding is that Leica will, on request, upgrade any older M7 to the new optical-DX reader for free. They will, but the optical one still isn't brilliant, and often reads canisters incorrectly. If you override the Auto setting, you get a little red flashing LED in the viewfinder. I had mine done and it was worth it, just to get over the need to bang the camera on your palm to dislodge the film canister from the vice-like grip of the old DX system. (I never did work out how that actually worked)
