sandymc Posted March 17, 2007 Share #2  Posted March 17, 2007 Well, my 2c worth:  If you like the handling of the D1, go for it, but as a imaging device, any of the Sony, Canon or Nikon will outperform it, especially in low light, just because of the bigger sensor.  As imaging devices, ignoring the lens, the Sony, Canon and Nikon are very close together.  Factor in the lens, the either the Nikon of the Canon will outperform the Sony under certain circumstances:  1. Canon will do better on fast moving moving subjects in low light  2. Nikon's VR will do better on still subjects in low light, but will do worse than the Canon on moving subjects - VR doesn't help on them.  If you aren't worried about low light/fast moving subjects, save the money and go with the Sony  Sandy
Julian H Posted March 17, 2007 Share #3  Posted March 17, 2007 Hi  Why have you chosen the 18-200 superzoom with the D80 and a 24-70 L zoom on the Canon?  Comparing those two in the exact configuration you specify, the Canon will, I suspect, be miles ahead. Putting the Nikkor 17-55 on the D80 would be much fairer (and would be my choice).  Julian
devils-advocate Posted March 17, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted March 17, 2007 My 2c: Â 1. Stay with Canon, Nikon or Pentax. Don't reject the new Pentax until you've had a look at it -- very nice camera, with excellent lenses. Â 2. Get a lens in the 17-40 range. The Canon 17-40L is excellent, for instance. Â 3. Don't get the EF24-70 in any event, it's too heavy. Get the 24-105 f4L IS. Â Have fun, Â - N.

like_no_other Posted March 18, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted March 18, 2007 Erwin, to answer your (partly open) question is a bit difficult because you didn't tell much about for what you need the camera. Â According to your given considerations of camera and lens combinations I suppose you are looking for excellent picture quality first coming together with a reasonable price. As criteria of quality you go for big names Zeiss, Leica, Canon L glas and a little bit hyped Nikon lens. Also you know that you want a zoom lens. Â Why not waiting a short time for new offerings. They are on the way. For Sony most probably some of the next cameras will have larger senors priced below Canon's and Nikon's professional cameras. Some high-class G-Zoom lenses will be available too. 2,8/24-70G and a successor of the 2,8/17-35G is due in your considered focal range.
Cindy Flood Posted March 18, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted March 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a Canon XTi (400D) that I use with my Leica 35mm f/2 summicron-R lens. The XTi is a very nice camera body for the money. It should work very nicely with the Canon 24-70L zoom lens. The only problem I see is that that is a very big lens. It's my typing error. I already had D-Lux3 on hand, so I would like to choose a DSLR for below requirement. D-lux3 is very good for every day carry, but I am considering to get one DSLR for better picture quality.  Requirement: =========== 1. Good photo quality in low light. 2. Better or similar zoom range than D-Lux3. 3. OIS/VR/IS ... or similar function will be required. This is the one of major reason to choose Nikon AFS VR 18-200 instead of Nikon 28-70 f2.8 lens. Of course, the price is another one.
