So, what are Mac users doing with their 10.4.9 folder images?

I am trying to think of a work round so that I can see what I am dealing with, but without using the Finder.

 

Although I have Lightroom, I do prefer the colours rendered by Capture One, but the LE version is not only incredibly slow when using a folder with lots of RAWs, but also takes up a shed-load of space with it's previews. The folder almost doubles in size once C1 has done it's thing.

 

So, what are others doing?

 

iViewMedia Pro maybe?

 

I really hope Apple get this sorted sometime soon, but if their past performance with our needs in mind is anything to go by...

I'm using Lightroom and I have both the library and previews files on an external Firewire 800. I don't notice that much of a lag - and I'm on a G4 Powerbook with 2GB of RAM.

 

I couldn't be bothered waiting for Aperture anymore to support my camera. I'm a real Apple fan but honestly, how long does it take?

 

Lightroom is a nice product. They had a beta everyone could use for a year, nearly complete RAW support and it is much more tolerant of older equipment.

I agree completely, Andy. I prefer the colors in C1 and use that to process those images I especially like. But I've gone to Lightroom as my primary browser/selection vehicle. I find Preview (Finder) to render images both with poorer color fidelity and with a slight softness, making it less than ideal for serious image review.

It is Lightroom by default for the M8/DMR files, right now. It is the only software I have found that lets you examine large enough previews, quickly enough, just for evaluation and tagging. iView and PhotoMechanic--and I guess everything else dependent on the OS for rendering previews--do not provide a large enough preview for reasonable examination. I prefer other software for conversion from RAW, but that gets into workflow and another thread. However, I will say if LR could allow real folder watching and keyword management like iView, it would really simply things for me.

Indeed, but it would be nice to see what your images actually are in the finder, as opposed to just this...

I'm very upset about this to be real honest. i don't want to have to open another program just to see something real quick. Bridge, I View, LR and all are nice programs don't get me wrong but when i open a folder i want to see a image so i can identify it and than do what i need with it. I bought a Mac for bloody sake and spent a fortune converting from a PC. This is a horrible situation. Apple prides itself on being the creative computer, i think not now. Sorry this sucks and it is costing me time and energy to open other programs. Sorry but this is not fair when you have it one day and not the next and you think your doing the right thing by updating your computer. i could absolutely kick myself for not backing up before the update ,I would go back in a second. Sorry for the early morning rant but needed to be said. It's a nice day i think I will go shoot my WATE

The jpegs will then at least render. But clearly that's a rube goldberg arrangement and Apple should be embarrased.

Hi Joe, iView doesn't use the OS for viewing the image - sorry if I misunderstand you. I have iView set up so that it shows three images across the screen on both my MacBook and XP systems.

 

I think you guys are taking this very well, I can't help wondering what this thread would have been like if it had been Microsoft that was responsible.

You have a few options:

Download Graphic Convertor from http://www.lemkesoft.com/ and use it's contextual menu item to add a picture icon to each image (in the window above, Cmd-A, Ctrl-click, Graphic Convertor, Create Picture Icon and Preview).

Secondly, 10.5 is just around the corner, and it will be able to do this directly from the Finder without as third party extension.

Apps like Graphic Convertor or Adobe Bridge can browse folders with whatever size preview you like.

This is not an option on the DMR.

 

Seems to me that DMR users are being completely forgotten about all round...

Yes and I have both the DMR and M8 . i am not taking it well at all but it's not life and death either so i will remain calm for everyones sake. LOL

 

Just don't put a Apple guy in front of me right now, it would get ugly. ROTFLMAO

Have you updated to 10.4.9 yet?

 

If not, when you do, all your M8 shots will disappear. (Unless you shoot DNG/jpg combined, in which case the preview function may be picking up the jpg embedded image. Just a thought)

 

10.4.8 and before were fine.

 

The GraphicConverter tip above works fine, btw, but it's a shame Apple broke what didn't need fixing.

It's not an Apple vs. Adobe thing. If you run the M8 files through LR and convert to "proper" DNG format, the finder shows previews just fine. This is just Apple not having M8 support as a priority.

Sorry, (relative) newbie here. Are you saying 10.9 will eradicate DNGs from the "Preview" (finder), or worse? Since for many images C1 with the "JR profiles" does a better job with the colors but for others LR with its embedded ACR 3.6 seems preferable, I use finder to determine where I want to process the incoming. And that involves a lot of trial and error. 'Tis a good thing I don't have to earn my living at this. (Would that the JR profiles could be used in LR. Or can they?) Awkward, but I have not found a better way, after learning all I can here. Perhaps I should import all into LR - which I like very much as it is intuitive, unlike that cumbersome and under-explained C1 LE - and skip the finder step entirely. Think I'll go shovel some snow - I understand how to do that. Top of the morning to all.
