rastas Posted October 4, 2012 Share #1 Posted October 4, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Who needs the new Leica M? I converted my 5dmk2 to take Leica M lenses (by disassembling the camera, modifying mirrorbox, etc). Works beautifully. Live view, 5 frames per second, clean files at ISO 2000, ability to nail focus each and every time, etc. This was shot with the Noctilux on my canon 5dmk2 a couple hours ago. another: http://www.flickr.com/photos/64014454@N04/8052728172/lightbox/ (snip)

Flouxooom Posted October 4, 2012 Share #4 Posted October 4, 2012 Wow, sounds interesting! Perhaps I shouldn't have sold my 5d mkii Last Year. I'm looking forward to your pictures of your Camera
pigeonfarmboy Posted October 6, 2012 Share #5 Posted October 6, 2012 Looking forward to see how the conversion was accomplished. I have been considering selling the canon gear but this could be another fun way to use the leica glass!
Tinchohs Posted October 7, 2012 Share #6 Posted October 7, 2012 Wow… Very interesting. I'm on the same boat. About to sell all my Canon Gear. I'd love to se this implmentation. My convince me to keep the body. Have you tried filming with this body and the Leica lenses?

FTI Posted October 7, 2012 Share #9 Posted October 7, 2012 Just my opinion ...and this is better than a Leica M9? I think you miss the point about what a rangefinder is for. What a waste and what a shame to hack up such a great camera as the 5D. Btw... I'm sure I saw this done some time before.
AlanG Posted October 8, 2012 Share #10 Posted October 8, 2012 Pretty daunting project. Your next challenge should be to take the lens mount and reflex system out of a Leicaflex SL2 and graft them onto the new M body.

k-hawinkler Posted October 8, 2012 Share #12 Posted October 8, 2012 Hi Rastas, Thank you so much and my heartfelt congratulations for this amazing achievement. It's always good to have options and I love competition. Judging from your few images, the system seems to work remarkable well in your hands. I wish you continued good luck with your projects. JeTexas Posted October 8, 2012 Share #15 Posted October 8, 2012 Two questions ... Does the optical viewfinder still work at all or must you always use the live view? Is there an adapter to go back to Canon lenses?
FTI Posted October 8, 2012 Share #16 Posted October 8, 2012 Congratulations on an interesting project! Its nice to see someone with a creative spirit and a sense of fun. The OP sells this option (just under 3K USD) as being better than the M9. Sure in absolute terms it will be better in many regards. So are the NEX's, the Ricoh's, the Fuji's. Hell my Canon S95 beats the M9 hands down when it comes to ISO values; but that's not the point is it? I don't mean to attack the OP but I'm merely expressing an opinion. jankap Posted October 13, 2012 Share #17 Posted October 13, 2012 Sure, but I'll have to take pictures of it tomorrow. Just finished conversion today.... What did you do to mount the Hoodman lens to the camera? I use it too and it is useful, but these rubber bands are rather primitive. Jan
iedei Posted October 13, 2012 Share #18 Posted October 13, 2012 i applaud your effort and thank you for sharing your project. That being said, i'm not really seeing the point. For $2950 (price as stated for this modified 5d) i'd much rather buy an M8.2. There are M9s floating around for $4k now. if someone can afford to buy a Noctilux, they can afford to buy an M body. It would also spare one's eyes of the horrific sight which is that frankenstein of a camera! With an M, one gets a truly beautiful machine and rangefinder focusing --- neither of which are offered here even in the slightest.

Like the idea or not yourself, his point was that he wanted to use live view and not the rangefinder. As for not being much of a beauty, the folks at Hasselblad will be glad to fix that for only $5000 more.
Messsucherkamera Posted October 14, 2012 Share #20 Posted October 14, 2012 This conversion looks like quite an exercise in ingenuity. It also seems a bit like traveling from New York City to Chicago by heading east rather than west. You'll get there - eventually - but there are more efficient routes.
