metalbernd Posted September 30, 2012 Share #1 Posted September 30, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I have bought myself a X2 and I was reading some treads about using the leica 12460 as lenshood. Is the size not 46mm? because I understand that there is a Kiwi tube 49mm for sale?
Advertisement Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 Hi metalbernd, Take a look here Lens hood X2..question.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
spylaw4 Posted September 30, 2012 Share #2 Posted September 30, 2012 The Kiwi tube screws onto the fitting on the camera originally designed for the 'Scope adapter and enables a 49mm filter/hood to be fitted. I am not sure about the 12460 - it may well fit but does it vignette? I've not tried it.
threeputt Posted October 1, 2012 Share #3 Posted October 1, 2012 I can't comment on the 12460 either, but I bought a Kiwi tube and it came with a hood as well. It looks rather Leica-like and is vented as well. It is made well and the threads are very smooth. A great value for under $30 US. Jeff

A Google search for the term yielded a lot of, let´s say, ´unexpected´ results...... One has to wonder what´s going on down under.....

metalbernd Posted October 9, 2012 Author Share #7 Posted October 9, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) This is how I did make this Leica hood 12460 perfect. When you screw the hood on the Leica, the front is on one line with the lens. So I found a rubber gasket that is 3mm thick, I put this ring around the screw mount of the camera, against the camera. Than screw the hood on against the rubber ring en turn a little bit more. So now there is 3mm overlapping between the hood and the lens. See my crappy photo. Anouk Posted October 10, 2012 Share #10 Posted October 10, 2012 Could yo maybe post a picture of the so called rubber gasket, so I know what to look for? I's like to add it to my X1 too! (just bought the 12460 hood myself)
metalbernd Posted October 10, 2012 Author Share #11 Posted October 10, 2012 It is a rubber ring from the plumber store, just search for rubber gaskets. Don't buy the oily or greased one, just the dry black rubber. I take a little bit smaller so it stretch out when you put it on. You can buy them with several sizes, that depend how thick you filter is. http://www.vanwalraven.com/img/products/295924pl.jpg But not to thick, make sure that the hood stay firm and lock on the screw-tread. nickma Posted October 19, 2012 Share #12 Posted October 19, 2012 12460 Leica hood + Smiths automotive rubber gasket is how I fitted mine about 10 months ago too and posted the details previously to this forum. Works a treat and gives a great cupped hand position for steadying shots. However there is no filter thread on a 12460 unlike the Kiwi tube, so it depends on what you want the hood for whether the 12460 is useful to you. In my case I have no need to fit a filter since the lens quality is so high any additional glass is likely to degrade IQ. But if you're looking for a hood to screw in close up magnification lens, then the 12460 isn't going to help you.
metalbernd Posted October 21, 2012 Author Share #13 Posted October 21, 2012 The main reason to buy this hood is protection and a better grip.
