Anyone Lose A Camera ?

While walking down the street here in Bogota, Colombia, I spotted what looked to be a Leica iiif (what I have) in the display of a pawn shop. I went for a closer look. I am not sure exactly what model it is, or if it is, in fact, actually a Leica or a knock off, but the serial number is 310241. It looks just like my iiif except that just below the slow speed dial there is what appears to be a flash sync.

The guy wants about $250 USD.

Just wondering if someone may have had a camera stolen while travelling around here.

mmmh... 310.xxx (probably a IIIC number) WITH flash sync ? Difficult it is original... even if IIIC with "retrofitted" sync exist... but maybe a fake, russian or so...and in any case not worth the risk of 250US$... for a IIIC body originally retrofitted, good conditions etc... that could just be a not-so-low price from a serious dealer.

310241 is a Leica IIIa from 1938 - 39. Those bodies are frequently found as Russian fakes, but easily identified as such.

If a real Leica, it should have separate rangefinder and viewfinder occulars on the back of the top plate. The fast shutter speed progression is 20 - 30 - 40 - 60 - 100 - 200 - 500 - 1000. Here is a link to an eBay auction with excellent pictures of the camera, for identifition purposes only.

are you saying that all cameras in pawn shops in colombia are stolen. quite an indictment. of course i have only spent an hour of my life in bogata and all my friends ipods were stolen.

No, I am not saying all cameras in pawn shops in Colombia are stolen, but here isn't a place you're likely to come across a leica in a pawn shop and if I remember correctly, there was a thread here awhile back about another Leica being found in Colombia in a pawn shop...I've only had my phone stolen (after 9 months) but I've heard horror stories from Colombians as well as a few ex pats I've run into.

Well there is no need to go to Bogota to find stolen goods in the pawn shop. My stolen Omega Seamaster was found in a pawn shop right here in Melbourne , with police assistance I was able to get it back.

However what hurt most was the pawnbroker did not let it go until I paid

back to him the money he paid to the thief. It was this or risk having him sabotage the watch. Since it was a present I did what I had to.

Years ago on holiday at my parents house in South Africa we went out for lunch at a seaside resort near Durban (about 300Km) from where my parents live. After departing I left my Billingham, M4 and a couple of lenses on the roof, got into the and sped off towards Cape Town. I realized next day I had lost my set only because a guy took the trouble to phone me and tell me that he had found it by the side of road...... amazing and hard to believe but honest folk still exist.

Manfred, most of the knock off stuff in Aus gets raced to the pawn shop because once the transaction is done there...the worst that can happen is the shop owner gets reimbursed. If you ever get the chance to talk to a coppa off the record...

Correct Rob this is how it happens. The Pawnbroker is fully aware he buys stolen goods , the police advises the owner he then tries to get his property back but this is only possible by court order in the meantime the pawnbroker is at liberty to deal with the problem. We do have a law receiving stolen goods ,its not working.By the way the shop in question has the name " The Pawnbroker " Chapel Street Prahran.
