Exposure metering with the M8

Please help me understand the Leica exposure meter. Reading the manual, the EM is supposed to have a range of EV 0 to 20, or a Brightness Value of from 0.09 to 90,000. In manual mode, this means that at iso 160 we have an exposure of f1.4 and 2s. *Any less and the meter goes out of range, symbolized by the flashing red arrow on the left hand side. My question is, how is it that using the same EM measuring cells, the camera can continue to calculate lower and lower exposures, but only in aperture priority? I mean the cells do not know whether it is darker outside or if I'm closing the aperture, so it should not be able to continue to calculate a correct exposure below EV0, yet it somehow does. *The meter seems to be able to correctly measure down to f1.4 and 30s, which is EV-4@iso 160. Clearly there's something I'm not understanding.

Also, my M8 never flashes the shutter speed when below the coupling range, only when above. The left arrow does flash, even though the manual says both should flash. Anyone else notice this behavior?*

There is a max linear 'measuring area' for a diode where you get reliable readings.

To my best knowledge this is how most cameras work; the correct exposure often go below what the manufacturer states in A mode...

Regarding your last line, are you in Aperture or Manual mode and what/where in the instruction manual are you referring to about the two arrows ?

If your camera doesn't do as stated in the instruction manual it's faulty.
