...how long will it be before Leica starts producing R lenses again, as a sort of budget lens range perhaps?

I'm guessing secondhand R lenses will get even scarcer now. New ones would be nice, possibly with focal ranges complementing M lenses.

New R lenses - it is not going to happen.

New M benefits from combination of recently matured technologies to pass Leica muster that make it possible to use & focus R lenses on M camera. In actual fact many other SLR lenses shall be usable and lets face it there are already suitable adapters in the market. Focal length specially on the long end is not going to be limiting factor on image quality.

R lenses were always very expensive; any new lenses will have to appeal not just to owners of the new Leica M but older cameras as well. It's a challenge. The business case for, say, a 50 - 135 zoom is weaker if you cannot support it on an M9. Click stops at 50, 75, 90 and 135mm? Fine, until you look at the problems (Tri-Elmar) of bringing up the framelines. It's going to be interesting to see what new lenses are introduced. For now, you can use R lenses and others...

The R system is still dead. Nothing has changed in this regard.

Hello Ruhayat,

I'm sorry to hear about your father. Your photos are very appropriate.

Don't forget: Leitz/Leica has always primarily been a lensmaker who also made camera bodies & other photographic accessories. They have consistently made some of the best in each category over the years.

Given that their SLR lenses & bodies were not seen as successful enough by Leitz/Leica. It is more likely that Leica will develop some M lenses which will come in 2 versions. 1 of which will be usable on already existant SLR's.

Don't forget: The SLR's pentaprism/mirror box is as much of a dinosaur as the current MP's range/viewfinder.

Best Regards,

Michael
