mat_mcdermott Posted March 14, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted March 14, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) A warning to Mac users who haven't yet updated to 10.4.9, your .dng files will no longer have a preview created in OS X when you update. All you get now is a generic icon with "DNG" at the top. At least for me it doesn't have an effect on my workflow, but it is pain nonetheless to not be able to open a folder full of Raw files and simply look for the file you need. Guest guy_mancuso Posted March 14, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted March 14, 2007 Okay now i am mad. This is nuts. I should have backed the system up. Â This war between APPLE and ADOBE has to end
billh Posted March 14, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted March 14, 2007 You can still see them in C1 and PSCS2 - correct? Â Does this site offer any insights or help? Â http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2560
scjohn Posted March 14, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted March 14, 2007 The war won't end. The sad fact is that Apple is more hostile to third-party software providers than Microsoft has ever dreamed of being. If Apple had a fraction of the market share Microsoft has, the Justice Department could have brought three times the antitrust suit against apple it brought against Microsoft. Â I bought my Apple to run photoshop faster. But Apple seems to be trying to work towards competing against Adobe rather than supporting it.
mat_mcdermott Posted March 14, 2007 Author Share #6 Â Posted March 14, 2007 You can still see them in C1 and PSCS2 - correct? Â Yes. It's just when you're looking at the folders in the Finder.

carstenw Posted March 14, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted March 14, 2007 I don't have a preview either. I don't recall if this was the case before the 10.4.9 update...
DaveEP Posted March 14, 2007 Share #12 Â Posted March 14, 2007 I have some that work and some that don't. Â It appears that the DNG files created by Adobe (from my original M8 files) DO work, but the DNG files created by my M8 don't.
mhoutman Posted March 14, 2007 Share #13  Posted March 14, 2007 from macfixit:  Apple has released Mac OS X 10.4.9, a major iterative update that includes vast improvements and is available in both PowerPC (client, server) and Intel (client, server) editions.  Briefly, improvements have been made to the following areas:  Application launch times RAW camera support !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Updated ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers Handling of large or malformed images that could cause crashes Image capture performance Mouse scrolling and keyboard shortcuts Font handling Dashboard stability Playback quality, and bookmarks in DVD Player USB video conferencing cameras for use with iChat Bluetooth devices Browsing AFP servers Apple USB Modem Windows-created digital certificates Open and Print dialogs in applications that use Rosetta on Intel-based Macs Sharing using AFP, SMB/CIFS, NFS and FTP file sharing protocols Login and authentication in a variety of network environments Connecting to Cisco VPN servers using IP/Sec and NAT AirPort including connectivity to EAP-FAST networks Searching iWork ‘06 and Microsoft Office documents using Spotlight Viewing of QuickTime streaming media behind a firewall Audio playback in QuickTime, iTunes, Final Cut Pro, and Soundtrack applications Determining the space required to burn folders Synchronizing contacts, bookmarks, and calendars to .Mac and mobile phones Mounting and unmounting iDisk volumes Time zone and daylight saving for 2006 and 2007
DaveEP Posted March 14, 2007 Share #14 Â Posted March 14, 2007 It's pretty hard to call this an Apple vs Adobe problem with the new version DOES SUPPORT DNG CREATED BY ADOBE !!! Â It's the Leica files that don't work.
mat_mcdermott Posted March 14, 2007 Author Share #15 Â Posted March 14, 2007 True, perhaps this isn't Apple v. Adobe, but the fact remains that I used to have preview icons for my M8 files and now I don't. Since the only change to my OS in the past 24 hours was that I updated to 10.4.9 (with it's claimed expanded support for RAW) the onus remains on Apple, not Leica. The fact remains that, at least in this one area, functionality of the Mac OS has actually been reduced by this upgrade not increased. (Which takes this post beyond it's Leica applicability...) Guest stnami Posted March 14, 2007 Share #16 Â Posted March 14, 2007 Quirks like this are quite common, like the printing error, mac only not windows
Guest sirvine Posted March 14, 2007 Share #17 Â Posted March 14, 2007 Hmm...I've never seen a DNG preview from my M8 files, but I wasn't exactly looking either. What bugs me is that if I import from my card reader directly into Lightroom, there are no previews in the import panel. But if I import the same stuff from my hard drive, the previews are there. Maybe it's an Adobe vs. Sandisk conspiracy?
Guest guy_mancuso Posted March 14, 2007 Share #18 Â Posted March 14, 2007 I had DNG previews before this new update but they are clearly gone now from the same file folder, even off my externals there not there
andybarton Posted March 14, 2007 Share #19 Â Posted March 14, 2007 Ditto. Â Given the amount of cash these companies have taken off us over the years, it's pathetic.
LichMD Posted March 14, 2007 Share #20 Â Posted March 14, 2007 Yeah, I downloaded the update and was perplexed when I couldn't view any of my DNGs. Then I realized that I had to install Eion's hack all over again!! What a pain. This needs to be fixed, I'm tired of saving two versions of each file and backing it all up to two different backup drives.
