I must say I'm totally confused by the new Leica lineup. It's almost one of those "Who's on first?" routines.

I'm sort confused to. I'm not sure what I was hoping for, but am more interested in getting an M9 now :-).

The new M has a 24mp CMOS with liveview, additional EVF, video. The M-E is basically the same as the M9. The S2 performs better at higher ISO's. Those are the basics

the M looks more up to today's standards, the low volume CMOS from some belgian company makes me worried though. it looks as if they could not acquire a CMOS sensor from a leading reputed international manufacturer like sony or renesas.

It says on CMOSIS's site that it was founded about 5 years ago by people who left Fill Factory. So maybe they have a good sensor there although a 6400 top ISO makes me wonder about a few things.

The M looks like a smart and obvious move that I said should have been done about 5 years ago. (Yeah they didn't have the ability until now.)

I think the M-E is just to keep something in the lineup to placate old timers. ;) They should have simply removed the image review LCD from it and just made a method for setting basic functions - format, ISO, etc. Then they could have charged $1,000 more.

Well, we'll see what the US price of the Leica M is, but it looks like Leica *nailed* my M10 wishlist:

  • Maestro processor / faster throughput (I'm hoping anyway)
  • Better DR / noise / ISO capability
  • Redesign of the OVF (with LED illumination of framelines)
  • Replacement of the OVF for more interesting things with the EVF. We'll see if it's worth having
  • X-synch and hotshoe
  • colour continuity with previous models (we'll see about that, but the choice of sensor manufacturer is really interesting!)
  • live view with high resolution should give some indication of how far off the RF is for a field adjustment (yay!)
  • resolution is *perfect* for a small system
  • additional weather resistance
  • M9-esque price :)

The only things I won't know till I have one in hand will be the noise level of the shutter, and how the buffer works with uncompressed DNGs :)

As for the M-E, I already have one, since I never use the USB port on the M9 and my frameline selector lever fell off :)

THANK-YOU LEICA! :D

I'm sure it's going to be a very fine camera but the back of the new M looks a little bit of a dog's dinner with the chrome coloured dial, the EVF port and the little thumbwheel thing poking out of the corner.

I'm assuming all that stuff would be black on the black one... it'll help a bit, no? :)

Presumably only by putting a lens on.

Yeah I was curious too and the manual of the M-E is already available for download so I took a look.

If lenses with focal lengths of 28 (Elmarit from serial number 2411001), 35, 50, 75 and 135mm are used, the associated bright-line frame automatically adjusts to the combinations 28+90mm, 35+135mm, 50+75mm.

very interesting to read about CMOSIS. years ago Fill factory provided the CCD sensor for the kodak 14n (based on a nikon body), which i had the -doubtful- pleasure of owning for a year. reasonably nice at base iso, 320 iso already totally crappy. i hope they have learnt.....although i do agree that 6400iso top makes me wonder - a lot. most likely 1600 iso usable, beyond that the same old leica story. but i'd be happy to stand corrected.

I agree not loving the back yet. It will take some time!

The new D600 is also only 6400, although I'd think its not likely that the sensor will match up to the Sony/Nikon sensors. I guess they couldn't get a deal with one of the big players. Question will be how far behind it lags. Guess we'll know in 2013.

Why is the new M so much fatter? Makes my M3 look positively svelte.

Hopefully, the new products will make many people happy, looks as if Leica has done well...except for the neon X2 special edition that I hate. The X2 a la carte is cool as are the changes to the D-Lux 5 (now D-Lux 6) and the V-Lux 4.:)
