The best news is the M-E. It appears to be an M9 minus the frame line preview lever, at a cost above what mint M9s are currently selling for. Should definitely bode well for the resale value of the M9. Another good thing in light of the cracking glass, it means the sensors are still being manufactured. Unless Leica is using their stockpile of spares for this new model.

The M (I wonder if Leica thought about the fact people might refer to it as the M-nothing) seems like a logical step forward. I do wonder about the omission of the frame preview lever though. Perhaps like the plastic LCD screen cover, it is a future upgrade in the making :p

Another big wonder is the upper limit of ISO 6400. Given it's a CMOS and only 24mp, and given the state of the art these days, and given that high ISO is probably the main objection to the M9, 6400 seems a bit of a low ceiling doesn't it?

All in all I'm thankful to Leica. Unlike when the M9 came out, this time I feel absolutely no desire to upgrade. The Canon 6D has my interest piqued however.

If the new M is just called 'M', what will the next new M be called? MMM?

We can't have MM, that's already taken and they say they're ditching the numbers.

Maybe 'M+A Bit More Improvement.'

They say they want to emphasize the long term support of the product. Uhmm, where have we heard that before?

I'm sure the new technology will appeal to the Modern Era Photographer, but for me it signals the end of the M in the true sense, which Leica must do in order to survive I suppose.

The X2 Limited is just yak, sorry.

Some of the M features sound very attractive, some less so, but this will vary from user to user.

What I'd really like to know, of course, is how the new sensor behaves and performs. Until we know that, its all a bit meaningless, though fascinating!

The new cameras look like sensible products and the prices are not unreasonable. I'm not sure about the new naming convention – dropping the number seems a little pretentious to me (and seems to ape Apple's decision to drop the number with the latest iPad) and M-E just sounds awkward and contrived (the safari-esque colour scheme isn't to my taste either).

I'm very impressed with this announcement. Re the M, it seems to me they've really tried to listen to many of the comments about what the new model should have. It will be very interesting indeed to see the image quality.

I guess all R lenses have just doubled in value :p

One thing - it is interesting that Leica is not using the 50 APO in the marketing images but are sticking to the "old" Summilux.

Nice - but I'll pass. Not with that obsolete Olympus EVF on it. Besides, I've taken delivery of my beautiful Monochrom today. Budget for this year overdrawn...:o

However, an attractive lineup, not disappointing.:)

Out of stock?

:-)

Well - there are now increasing number of competitors in Leicas home yard. Not to mention Nikon D600 with FF asking a low price from customers.

ISO 6400 as Max level better be swell :-)

Its a M8 with a better sensor and lots of warts!

- Pricing seems very competitive, especially the ME, which is good for M9 owners as well. If around 5000 pound sterling retail, I am buying one...

- Whats up with the oversized LCD on M, does it overlap the bottom plate?

- Now that we have live view, can we dream of proper T/S and macro M lenses?

- The "spy pictures" rumor corresponds exactly with the new model.

- naming regime is consistent with lenses, just like the 35mm summilux Asph did not get a "mark2" designation. I guess this is a good idea, if the idea is to confuse customers.

- 35mm cron in the shots probably means no update for a while. But perhaps a price drop or special kit price with ME?
