RED ROBIN Posted September 12, 2012 Share #1 Posted September 12, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Took another look at the III-A I will soon purchase:D I noted the tripod hole "seemed" larger(?), is it bigger than the now standard size? :confused:Didn't have anything to really try on it. If it is indeed bigger what is the fix? This will be my 1st Leica camera body.

Alan Philpotts Posted September 12, 2012 Share #2 Posted September 12, 2012 Hi Red Robin You will probably need a converter bush like this: Hama 5120 Tripod Converter Bush: Amazon.co.uk: Camera & Photo Best regards Alan
lars_bergquist Posted September 12, 2012 Share #3 Posted September 12, 2012 There were originally two bushing sizes, the 'international' 1/4-inch size, and the 'continental' 3/8-inch one. Leica cameras were originally made with the 'continental' bushing, but they could for at least some time also be had with the 'international' one. This was mostly for the British and U.S. markets. The universal changeover to the smaller size was done sometime during the late 1950's or early 1960's; I think that early M3 and M2 cameras also use the larger size. My own M2 did. But my Linhof ball head is convertible between the sizes! The old man from the Screw-Ball Age
Twotone Posted September 12, 2012 Share #4 Posted September 12, 2012 My M3 has the larger size thread but it came with a bush to take it down the smaller size. The serial number on the camera dates it from a batch of 2000 circa June 1960.
pico Posted September 12, 2012 Share #5 Posted September 12, 2012 Note that Leitz made a very clever ball-head which accommodates both 1/4 and 3/8" at once. When you place the camera base socket over the ball-head's screw, the ball-head's thread will retract from 3/8" to 1/4" if necessary; if the camera has 3/8" it does not retract. Instant fit! Mine has no model designation other than Leitz D.

It is the last variant of the long lived KGOON (then 14115) "large" ball-head (the "small" ball-head FOOMI hadn't this facility, iirc)
