RED ROBIN

There were originally two bushing sizes, the 'international' 1/4-inch size, and the 'continental' 3/8-inch one. Leica cameras were originally made with the 'continental' bushing, but they could for at least some time also be had with the 'international' one. This was mostly for the British and U.S. markets. The universal changeover to the smaller size was done sometime during the late 1950's or early 1960's; I think that early M3 and M2 cameras also use the larger size. My own M2 did.

But my Linhof ball head is convertible between the sizes!

Note that Leitz made a very clever ball-head which accommodates both 1/4 and 3/8" at once. When you place the camera base socket over the ball-head's screw, the ball-head's thread will retract from 3/8" to 1/4" if necessary; if the camera has 3/8" it does not retract. Instant fit!

Mine has no model designation other than Leitz D.

It is the last variant of the long lived KGOON (then 14115) "large" ball-head (the "small" ball-head FOOMI hadn't this facility, iirc)
