tobey bilek Posted September 11, 2012 Share #3 Posted September 11, 2012 Just a point of interest, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri and a fourth I can`t remember were all the same, same class in Naval talk. They were last used in the first gulf war, Missouri, for shelling Kuwait. The range of the big guns is 25 miles and that is how far the Iraqis moved back from the beach. The big shells are 16" diameter and stand around 5 to 6 feet tall. Powder bags are packed in the breach to send them on their way. It is said you can actually see them flying through the air. All four ships , the last BB`s, were all retired after WW2 and select ones were recommissioned for short periods of service like the kuwait invasion. The technology is all old and it costs so much to operate , the government can not even afford it. Something like a million dollars a day in fuel alone, but do not quote me on that. They deserve to pay the gas guzzler tax. New Jersey was the fourth,
pauledell Posted September 11, 2012 Share #4 Posted September 11, 2012 Neal, An impressive view of some of the firepower from this fine "Fighting Lady". A lot of naval history is docked there. Paul

peterbengtson Posted September 12, 2012 Share #6 Posted September 12, 2012 In an antiques store/flea market last week in Pennsylvania I saw a large maintenance manual for these guns issued by the Naval Ordinance Bureau. I was tempted to buy it but the $50 price put me off.
