"pseudo-official" facebook answer, if someone had missed it, in regarding of someone asking for the new m lens:

"Carl Zeiss Lenses Regarding your questions about the new ZM lens: In 2013, at least one fast lens with M bayonet will go on sale. But you'll have to be patient, we are not yet revealing anything more. Sorry :-) !"

That was me :) it was a pity that they did not launched the new ZM lens at Photokina.

2013 will bring "At least one fast M-Mount ZM lens".

Let's put thinking caps on. What lens will this one replace?

The answer may be the weakest ZM product line player in a key focal length domain.

That seems to be the 50 f/1.5 Sonnar. Support for this view is the fact that its price has been raised well above other better performing players like the Planar & C-Biogons.

Another possibility is a replacement for the laggard 28 f/2.8.

But the best fit is the 50mm f/1.5 Sonnar. We can see the future price as placed well below the Leica 50AA with perhaps a close APO performance (Though this would be a departure for Zeiss).

However Zeiss has acknowledged the CSC market in a big way and the new ZM (If it is the 50) would fit well as a portrait lens on those cameras.

In any event we can all engage in fun speculation over Oktoberfest beers.

The 50/1.5 ZM Sonnar was designed to draw in a specific way, in which it succeeded. I think it was a weird decision but I don't see Zeiss going back on that decision. The 28/2.8 Biogon is a superb lens and equal in every way to the Elmarit 28 other than size (it is a bit bigger). The Summicron ASPH 28 is superior but at a very different price point and maybe one of the finest Leica lenses in current production. Zeiss need to target a price/lens point that Leica currently don't. The ultra fast 35mm seems the obvious target - say a 35 f1 or f1.1 or maybe a 28 f1.2. If they had been really clever, they would reissue the 35-70 Vario Sonnar G in an RF coupled version for the M-240.

If they do come up with yet another fast 50, I hope they keep the C Sonnar in place, it truly is a unique and exceedingly lovely lens. I'm not planning on selling mine despite getting the 50 Summilux asph, if that tells you anything :)

Economics and marketing common sense have not been a Zeiss strong point in recent years e.g. bringing out the new Ikon RF camera just as everyone else was going digital. I would not be at all surprised that when we see what they bring out, we all go: "WHAT??????"

I'd love to see that happen. Them working on a "difficult" lens design may explain why they planned announcement was delayed.
