Exactly the same as Andy has posted ... Leica backed the wrong horse. :)

Yeah, I always questioned Leica's choice with DNG. I don't know all the facts involved, but on the surface it seems to benefit only marketing in riding the DNG universal and longevity myth wave.

Well, it also probably meant that Leica did not have to reinvent the wheel. I am not aware of Adobe charging any royalties, so what would Leica have to lose? Adobe does know a lot about imaging, even if they aren't everyone's favorite company.

possible scenario:

Adobe sues everybody 10 yrs later for infringing on their 'DNG' technology.

Am I just delusional? But just last week, Alcatel/Lucent was awarded

USD1.5 billion for MS infringing on MP3 technology. And that is just the tip of the

iceberg.

Once again I have to be the messenger and will probably get flamed. It has nothing to do with Apple vs. Adobe! It's the fact that LEICA hasn't settled on their firmware yet!

I talked with the senior developer of Aperture, Joe Schorr, this evening. "Leica has to get it right first before we can do anything." He stated that the way the application is scripted his development team needs the correct firmware. "If we make something now and the new firware comes out and your images look like crap, you'll blame Aperture", he also went on to say. He also stated to me that the M8 is a high priority.

....snip

My BS meter just pegged so hard the needle bent. Apple doesn't support Imacon's .fff format or their .3fr format, either. I guess it doesn't meet their standards for professional cameras. Or, as Mr. Schorr put it, 'they haven't got it right' yet, either.

And we won't mention what a resource hog Aperture is. The pessimistic side of me might say Apple does this to sell more hardware.

ROTFL!!

Fortunately we have alternative SW. I am having a blast with LR 1.0. I am a long-time Mac fan and still have my '84 512K 'Fat Mac' but forget their SW.

I'm about to pull the trial of Aperture off my system. Until there is full support than maybe i will come back . But this whole deal is BS. I spent 14 grand on 2 Mac systems and if my camera's are not supported than it is worthless to me. Bottom line i don't care who is the blame it don't work and not going to expend any more energy on it. It looks nice but they lost me with Aperture

Just get Lightroom, cheaper than Aperture and very nice. Adobe has better commitment to their SW too.

I'm pretty frustrated too. An Apple employee who I won't name PM'd me from another forum and told me in fewer words the problem with Leica support for Aperture was because Leica owners had not put pressure on Leica to provide whatever they needed - cameras or whatever. I called Leica NJ after that and was told like I have read elsewhere on this forum that Leica had supplied Apple with "whatever they needed." Well I was also told that the DMR firmware upgrade is being tested now too. Hard to say who's telling the truth but I'll bet the problem is more politics than anything. Why Apple would turn their nose up at Leica is a wonder, but the guy from Apple said that he thought it would be more effective to put pressure on Leica than Apple.

Bought lightroom and using it now and its starting to show some advantages. I'm also curious to see the new bridge. There are new cameras coming out like every week or month - if Apple can't figure out how to provide support faster they are going to get left in the dust.

Eric a load of crap(not you). I got it directly from Leica that they supplied Apple with a M8 in January with the latest firmware . Apple said it will eventually support the M8 but not the DMR. Apple is just pushing the buck. Leica wants Apple to support the M8. So they have no reason to lie about it.

I do have LR already installed and as a catolog system works very well but as a Raw converter i am seeing some kind of clipping on the toe and the shoulder of the curve. Of course it needs more testing from me too , so not given up on the converter yet but i do like the controls better than C1 and i saw C1 version 4 at PMA and it looks very good. I'm dying to get my paws on a beta version.

I make the right hand side panel of the LR bigger while in develop, improves curve control (streched out). Start with the the top part in develop, then work down. I also close the left side of the window (navigator) while develpoing to make the image bigger. Working on 17" Laptop.

Hi Guy

Wow!

I have just manged 6000 since the end of Dec! I am entering them in 4GB chunks (folders). I have three DVDs of each (paranoid!) as well as two copies on separate HDs - the 5 copies of each folder have the same name. LR will recognize the folder name even if on different media - one has to point out the first pic, however. The LL videos do a pretty good job of showing one how to do it.

Very disappointing, but not surprising. This whole thing has been a complete nonsense.

One of the main reasons why I'm leaning towards Aperture--project export. There's currently no way in Lightroom to make selects and organize a library remotely then sync it or import those changes back into your main library when you get home. Image-specific settings, fine, those can be written to the sidecars and, I believe, embedded in DNGs. But I don't only develop, tag, or rate when I'm traveling. I also stack and move to collections. I'm not sure how XMPs handle virtual copies. I'll have to try that out.

Aperture handles almost all of this seamlessly.

Wish it handled the M8 seamlessly too :(

When I won one of the raffles at the Aperture vs. Lightroom showdown last night in SF, I had a hard time deciding whether to take the Aperture box or the Lightroom box. I took the Aperture box. Some of that was impulse, and some of it also was knowing that if anything, I can pick Lighroom up for $100 cheaper in the next month or so. But a lot of it was that I cannot for the life of me get decent color out of Lightroom, even on my 1DmkII files. I can get a lot of colors, yes, but not often the ones that I want. :)

Anyway, I still haven't settled on either program yet, and in some sick way I'm enjoying working in both of them, testing my capacity for different keyboard shortcuts for the same functionality...a test I fail remarkably often, I might add.

You may have to run some calibration tests with a color card and try to do this by the numbers. There was a script out there for ACR to calibrate it, but i lost track of that. LR seems a little too red with the M8 files right off the top and actually so does ACR . Someone at Adobe likes red for some reason

Oh cr*p...just updated to 10.4.9...now i have to do the raw.plist thing again....

Hans

Hans,

Could you explain this? Would be most grateful. I have posted on another thread but Icon preview for DNG seems to have disappeared in Finder with 10.4.9. Tried both on PowerPC and Intel Macs.

I posted several presets using the ACR calibrator for v 1.09 & 1.091.I haven't yet done it for 1.092 since I hear that 1.10 will be here soon. If there is a consensus I would be glad to do it for 1.092 ,The calibrations work for the ACR calibration tab also in PSCS 2 & 3(beta)

Previous presets are here:

M8 Lightroom Presets

others:Inside Lightroom I noticed there are some new presets for version 1.092

The color matrix has changed for the better with 1.092. It may stay that way even for the 1.10 since it is pretty good now

Hi Wilson,

I use Eoin's hack for Aperture on my M8 files. This means editing the raw.plist file so Aperture can work with and show the M8 files. The 10.4.9 update from Apple has added support for a number of camera's so it replaces the edited raw.plist file with a new one. After editing the new file the same way as the old file Aperture works fine again.

edit: i didn't read your post well enough...you were talking about icon preview. You are completely right: it has disappeared. Even with the edited raw.plist file. Hadn't noticed until now. That sucks...
