Which flash for R4?

I have an option for picking up a nice Leica SF24 for $200 but the 58 is about $640 at B&H. Is Metz a good alternative and if so, which one?:)

Dave, neither of the above would be optimal for the R4. The R4 used the earlier SCA 300 series interface (specifically 351 for Leica I think) whereas the two more recent dedicated units you mention use the later SCA 3000 series interface, which is very different. They would probably work OK using the central pin only just to fire the flash, but no communication with the camera could take place

I honestly think you'd be a lot better off looking for a gun which is compatible with the 300 series interface, and get the SCA 351 adapter to go with it. I've found Metz guns to be excellent.

PS: Actually the R4 won't do much talking to the flash, apart from achnowledgement, and auto-switching to the X-sync speed. (I don't think it has TTL metering for example). Stephens in Manchester UK have a s/h Metz 36CT3 with SCA 351 foot (and an off-camera flash cord) for £50.

I recommend the old Vivitar 3700 with dedication module DM/M (for Minolta. If you recall, the R4 was jointly developed with Minolta and happened to share the dedication electronics. I've used them since 1985 on my R4s and R4SP. Nicely made, very powerful and has bounce and swivel. I still have several and they're still going strong after all these years. KEH often has them dirt cheap, and eBay, too. Auto exposure accuracy is phenomenal, often better than some ttl flash rigs that I've worked with.

Thanks, guys.

How about a Metz? Which one? And where on earth does one find a synchronizer module?

Do you have a Camera Club in your area? (I'm sure Google could find one). If so, the club could let you know of any Camera Fairs or Markets coming up. There is a good chance you could find a module there.
