Ruhayat Posted September 3, 2012 Share #1 Posted September 3, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just traded my M6TTL for a mint Leica X1 + cash for travel and so far I find what I have heard/read about it is basically true. Eg, dials that can accidentally be nudged, slippery, etc. Oh, and brilliant image quality! I note that some shortcomings of the X1 have been rectified in the X2, but would still like to see these further improvements in the X3, most of which are features found on the rather better designed Digilux 2: 1) Lens that doesn't extend, even if it means length will be slightly longer than retracted now. 2) Aperture setting on the lens, not on top dial. 3) Lens housing made of metal. 4) More heft/bulk, possibly by using chrome on top? Would be nice. 5) Video. 6) Built-in optical VF a-la Leica III series. 7) Grippier skin - Griptac would be nice. 8) Longer battery life when shooting stills. 9) Cheaper batteries. 10) Top panel LCD - can't see how it would fit, but would be nice to have. 11) Sliding chrome bottom panel to reveal battery and SD card. 12) Manual focusing by wire, by simply turning a ring on the lens. 13) Strap lugs both on one side a-la M5 so camera will hang vertically - nice to have. One can dream.
Advertisement Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Hi Ruhayat, Take a look here Wishlist for X3. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Ruhayat Posted September 3, 2012 Author Share #2 Posted September 3, 2012 All in all, the X1 makes for a reasonable travel companion to my M7, which was what I'd been hoping for. So now I can carry 35mm and 90mm focal lengths in two compact packages. Nice. Just wish the X1 is a bit more robust - it already has 2 dings on the top panel from where it got dropped by the previous owner (who only just bought it in January this year) and me. I'm ordering some Griptac from Camera Leather and a Thumbs Up device, which should suffice. A friend added the grip to his X1, and while it does make it easier to handle while adding the needed heft, it also makes the camera bulkier and it kept snagging in my pocket when I tried it. NZDavid Posted September 4, 2012 Share #3 Posted September 4, 2012 My wishlist: Combine the best features of the D-Lux 5 (especially the very nice and useful f/2-3.3 24-90 lens) with the best features of the X1-X2 (especially manual shutter and aperture controls). Having said that, 35 is still probably the perfect travel lens if you can only have one focal length.
dkCambridgeshire Posted September 6, 2012 Share #4 Posted September 6, 2012 My wishlist: Combine the best features of the D-Lux 5 (especially the very nice and useful f/2-3.3 24-90 lens) with the best features of the X1-X2 (especially manual shutter and aperture controls). Having said that, 35 is still probably the perfect travel lens if you can only have one focal length. An f2-3.3 24-90 lens on an APS-C sensor X3 would be enormous ... thus not possible. dunk
NZDavid Posted September 7, 2012 Share #5 Posted September 7, 2012 Well, it was a wishlist. Maybe we should also have a wishlist for a new D-Lux, as per above. The simple manual controls of the X series are one of the camera's big plus points, IMO. Few other manufacturers except Fuji have emulated Leica in this regard. Peter_S Posted September 7, 2012 Share #6 Posted September 7, 2012 I use the X1 as companion and back-up for my M7, as well. I cannot complain at all, but what I would like to see in the future: - simple on-board OVF, with approx focus-area for spot-focus marked (similar to Contax T3 and other analog P&S) - no AA-filter - 45mm or 50mm equiv. focal length. Else - I hope the X remains what it is - a great, simple camera concept, that nicely works on its own, but even better as addition to the M.
spylaw4 Posted September 7, 2012 Share #7 Posted September 7, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I usually don't take part in this sort of thread ...... but...... For me ..... Improve but don't essentially change a thing. 35/36mm is the best. As the global EVF quality improves then use what's available. Improve the LCD similarly. If it ever becomes possible to do DNG only then that is something I would like to see. If Leica can maintain image quality then a 24 - 75 equivalent would be nice, but how about an option, prime or zoom? I can live with f2.8.
dkCambridgeshire Posted September 10, 2012 Share #8 Posted September 10, 2012 I'd like to see an X series Leica compact with an 18mm lens (27mm FF equivalent) . One of my favourite film cameras was the Ricoh GR-1 and an APS-C version would be just the ticket for a pocketable wide angle digital compact. Not too bothered about a built in flash ... prefer to have a small add-on dedicated flash. dunk

Ruhayat Posted September 10, 2012 Author Share #10 Posted September 10, 2012 Sounds like you're describing the fuji X100 apart from points 10 and 13!! Actually, I was describing the Leica Digilux 2! Except for (4), (10), (11) and (13), that is. My Digilux 2 would benefit from some heft, too, I feel, as well as metal top and bottom - the silver paint on mine has rubbed off here and there, revealing a hideous plastic shell underneath. Tried the X100. Found that I didn't like it. Preferred the X10, which I would have bought, had someone not offered me the trade of my idle M6TTL with his X1 + cash. Lee Martin Posted September 12, 2012 Share #11 Posted September 12, 2012 The X 2 has just been made to look rather old and outdated with the fantastic looking Sony RX1, it appears that they have read the wish list and then gone ahead and made it reality. Leica will have to really up the game if they want the product to retain any sort of value for money. I realise that this isn't the main goal, but it does make Leica look lazy. If they had included an optical viewfinder I think it would have been just about perfect in this class of camera.
earleygallery Posted September 12, 2012 Share #12 Posted September 12, 2012 If there is to be an X3 (if Leica release a new EVF interchangeable lens camera will they need the X series?) I would like to see a design more like the X100. Fixed design lens barrel, built in viewfinder (optical), filter thread, aperture ring, focussing ring for manual focus, good protection against ingress of dust onto the sensor! I don't see the point of an EVF for a fixed focal length camera. It means that you cannot use a viewfinder and separate flash at the same time, and it adds a lot of bulk (and cost) to the camera. oleh Posted September 14, 2012 Share #13 Posted September 14, 2012 The X3 will tempt me to upgrade from my X2 if it has at least one of the following features: - full-scale sensor similar to M9 - retina resolution display or electronic viewfinder - built-in optical viewfinder - aperture control wheel on the lens - manual focus control wheel on the lens (paired with hi-res EVF or OVF, otherwise not applicable)

I've see some samples and skin tones look worse than X2. RX1 will not make you a better photographer!! wda Posted September 14, 2012 Share #15 Posted September 14, 2012 ...7) Grippier skin - Griptac would be nice. ... Agreed. Otherwise my X1 still delivers the quality I sought when I bought it when first launched.
Spaniard69 Posted September 15, 2012 Share #16 Posted September 15, 2012 I gotten myself a X2 becoz Leica have less complicated menu compared to other brands. I rather Leica keep things simple and neat, no matter what i'll still enjoy my X2z

Why don't you share where you have seen RX1 output, i.e. raw files. I assume you are aware that the X2 has Sony under the hood.

dave.gt Posted September 17, 2012 Share #19 Posted September 17, 2012 The X3 is two years or better away...for now, I wish only one thing: Real engraving on the top plate that says "Leica", big and bold like on my M3 and the IIIF!!! Maybe on top of the flash cover...or eliminate the flash all together to allow more room for the classy engraving. This could be done on the older bodies as well as on the a la carte X2. BTW, I love the idea of the a la carte for the X2. Maybe if we can get sophisticated with the details on the X2, it will carry over to the next iteration (X3?). threeputt Posted September 18, 2012 Share #20 Posted September 18, 2012 I just hope Leica takes their sweet time on coming out with the X3! I'm digging my new X2 for now and don't want to (can't afford to) be tempted again so soon Jeff
