Thousands of M8 LCD panels available

According to Mark Norton, who dissected the original M8, the Toppoly TD025WHEB2 is the LCD panel in the M8.

According to JAAPV, the M9 uses a different panel.

Well then, suppose one located a replacement screen and bought it, then sent it to Leica with the broken M8 camera to be replaced?

I may be wrong, but a simple Google search reveals thousands of Toppoly TD025WHEB2 LCD panels for sale by independent distributors.

One would assume Leica techs scoured the web for replacement panels when they ran out, but what if they didn't?

If thousands of these LCDs are, in fact, available, what would be the logical reason why Leica no longer wants to replace them?

Thanks for replying, Mark. I admired your work when you posted the M8 stripdown.

While it is certainly within the realm of possibility for Leica to have made a custom screen, I find that somewhat implausible.

Leica was on the ropes when designing the M8, and they tried to use as many off the shelf components as possible. It doesn't seem logical that they would pay a big premium to have a common LCD screen customized for the first run of cameras.

Who knows though, anything is possible. I just wonder if the "proper" German techs at Leica gave any thought to searching for an alternate supply of LCDs rather than from the primary distributor?

Interesting. Truth is we do not know what the reason for Leica's inability to replace the screen and it might be they use a customised version of it - a unique flex print for example - but we don't know. Good find by you though!

Reading this thread it looks to me like a mentality issue on the part of Leica after sales department underpinned by corporate guidance.

As part of my day job I design assure, on behalf of the UK utility, equipment provided by leading German engineering company. Common problem is attitude where German supplier think they know everything best. What our friends tend to ignore old adage that customer is the king, there is healthy competition out there so watch out.

Going back to history of Leica it was Canadian branch who saved the company from self destruction back in 1970s so perhaps some of that Canadian spirit is missing today.

Well if my screen got damaged and Leica said they could not repair it, I would be beyond words... This would go against everything I have believed about the company, and one of the reasons that Leica enjoys the very enviable reputation that it enjoys today....And one of the reasons that I bought into the Leica dream.

Agree.

At least manual focus lenses don't break.
