Friends, I reecntly tried a Leica 1.25 magnifier which helped me to focus more quickly. At anywhere from $280 and up it is rather pricey. Several Ebay sellers offer generic ones for just over $100. Anyone have any personal experience with one of these after-market magnifiers?

Thanks

David

yep, I had two of them from different vendors and both seem to be identical.

All in all I was very pleased. Sharp, easy to view through, decent leather case that attaches to the strap.

I first used a generic HK Supplies 1.25 magnifier that I found through 'that online auction website' because I was using my 90/2 APO-Summicron asph a lot and conventional wisdom indicated that a magnifier would help. The magnifier did seem to help and I was pleased with it until looking through the viewfinder of another forum member's camera that had the Leica 1.25 magnifier attached and I noticed that it was brighter and free from distortion.

So I acquired the expensive Leica 1.25 magnifier and was pretty happy with it and left on the vf permanently until one day I was using my 28/2 Summicron and removed the magnifier to do some accurate framing and I was astounded at how bright, clear, and contrasty the viewfinder is without the magnifier. I haven't used either magnifier since because of the reduced contrast and I have no problem nailing focus with my 90AA.:o

I had an ebay magnifyer. It worked well but seemed to come loose easily. And I did lose it.

I now have an E-clypse brand with the eye cup. The rubber cup will help increase contrast. Also it seems to stay on better. Tightened up it seems to stay tight. I did take it off once and I guess I didn't tighten it well enough and it came off. Almost lost that one too. Luckily found it on the floor of my rental car.

I would steer clear of the Leica brand just for the reason that you may lose it easily.

Brian,

The Leica magnifier has a little chain attached to it that can be clipped to the strap lug so that the magnifier won't leave your camera.:)
