I found the following on AppleInsider.

What a disappointment if it is true.

AppleInsider is a Apple rumor site. So, take it for what it's worth. But they are quoting Joe Schorr from Apple , who posted on the Apple forum.

Impending Aperture update to expand RAW support

Published: 06:00 PM EST

Apple Inc. is on the verge of releasing an update to its Aperture post-production photography software that will add RAW file support for about a dozen additional digital SLR camera formats.

Among those cameras to see their native RAW formats accredited with the update are the Pentax K10D, K100D, and K110D, Apple Sr. Product Manager, Joe Schorr, recently told a forum of Aperture users.

He said the update will also bundle "support for 11 other RAW formats from different cameras, including the Nikon D40, Leica Digilux 3, Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1, Samsung GX-1L, and seven of the Leaf Aptus and Valeo models."

Schorr would not offer a precise date for the release, but told users they could expect the update "very soon."

The RAW updates may be part of broader Aperture revision that Apple plans to post for download ahead of WPPI -- the Wedding & Portrait Photographers International conference that runs March 24 - 29. The Mac maker is amongst the scheduled exhibitors, occupying decently-sized booth #351.

Apple last updated Aperture in December with the release of version 1.5.2, which also offered added RAW support and overall reliability and performance enhancements.

How can one expect the aperture team to release support for the M8 when Leica have not yet finalized the firmware and no doubt the colour info in the DNG exif?. Apple have stated elsewhere that the M8 WILL be supported in the near future.

If I get over this damn flu, I'll be attending an event tomorrow evening in SF--a showdown of sorts between Lightroom and Aperture, hosted by none other than Tom Hogarty and Joe Schorr.

Tuesday March 13, 2007: Side by Side: Apple Aperture and Adobe Lightroom

I doubt I'll get Mr. Schorr to cough up any commitments, but I'll certainly voice the opinion quite prevalent on this forum :)

That is, if I have a voice...

Anyone else going?

I'm planning on going. I have held Mr. Schorr's ear hostage once before and will be willing to do it again.

Even ask Joe if he'll release the "work in progress" control strings to someone (me) that we can place in the raw.plist without having to wait for the next official support update.

I do suspect however, M8 DNG's will still need to be run through the Adobe DNG converter even if there is native support from Apple, perhaps someone could also as this question please?.

Why? Do you think that the Leica DNG is not vanilla implementation of the adobe spec?

Perhaps, but what's the Adobe DNG converter doing that makes the file readable?. Compression and mosaic decode I presume. Either way the tags within the file are required for decode, but leica have changed some values in fw 1.091/1.092, there is still a fw release due mid April (aka 1.10) that is reported to address the cyan issue, how do we know if more tags need to be changed or not. If there is a change surly the decode would need to be amended. I'd guess this is the delay along with the reported DMR fw rewrite. When these are released I'm sure you'll see support for both.

Well maybe it isn't doing that much but removing the Leica specifc tags and passing a more vanilla dng, which then aperture plus the hack can understand?

The more I work with the camera the more I see how Aperture is not really doing a good job of the decode using the hack, all the highlight information is getting compressed, I have had to go to LR mostly, mainly because I "hate" C1. Fortunately LR is doing a pretty good job as is.

Did you ever try to get Aperture to understand the camera DNG's straight with the raw.plist hacked to add a dict. entry for Leica M8?

I don't understand if LR can handle the DNG's as is, aperture should be able to also, but it just needs "a" set of numbers to do the decode, and as you have shown, if the D200 numbers work, what the heck is going on that Aperture cannot recognize a DNG?
