stephengilbert Posted March 12, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted March 12, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've got a suggestion to propose. When there is a post from someone that you appreciate and want to thank the poster for, how about doing so in a private message? Â An example is the response to Guy's Las Vegas report. I'm sure that many or most of us appreciated it, but is it necessary to post a reply that says no more than "Thanks, Guy?" (I'm not talking about replies that ask for more information, but those that literally say nothing more than "Thank you." I'm sure that doing this in a private message will have the same effect as doing so in a public reply, and it will shorten the threads.) Â The result of this practice is that compulsive readers of the Forum (like me) go back to threads that have nothing new in them in the mistaken belief that the five or ten new messages say something. Â Thanks for the report, Guy. Â Steve Gilbert

bill Posted March 12, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted March 12, 2007 Many threads would be a hell of a lot shorter if people didn't keep hitting the (QUOTE) button with such gay abandon. It just isn't necessary, particularly when the post you are quoting is the one immediately above!! Â Regards, Â Bill

Guest guy_mancuso Posted March 12, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted March 12, 2007 Starting to feel really guilty today first the photos in the digital forum than the quote things. Geez guilty as charged on some occasions. LOL
sdai Posted March 12, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted March 12, 2007 In most cases I'm finding that quoting someone's posts is really needed because in flat view mode it's really hard to track whom I'm talking to or whom the other guy was talking to ... Â As of posting photos on the Internet, if my wife sees my kids' and family photos floating around, I'm surely going to be torn into pieces. Sorry guys, but I'm not into street candids as many of you are. Cheers.

Between when you hit the reply button and you get done typing your reply 1-2-3-4-5 other people could be hitting the Send/Submit Reply button. If this forum had a feature to say "Reply to User XXX" then you could figure out to whom, what post, the reply was to. But without that feature a reply on the second or third page could be to the original poster at the top of the first page. And since many of the threads at this forum get off the original topic some times I can't figure out what reply X has to do with the original thread. I find nothing wrong with Quoting but I do try to keep is short and delete any image links. As to the original post. Yes it would be nice if people wouldn't just reply with Thanks. But then some feel that they need to make some kind of post.
wparsonsgisnet Posted March 12, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted March 12, 2007 it is possible to quote and only use a portion of the earlier posting. Just edit the quoted section in the new post.

And since many of the threads at this forum get off the original topic some times I can't figure out what reply X has to do with the original thread.. That's funny - we do have this feature Just go to the "Display Modes" Menu above each thread - you can switch there from "Linear mode" (default - show all postings in one line) to "Threaded mode" (showing which posting was a reply to another).  I find nothing wrong with Quoting but I do try to keep is short and delete any image links. Fully agree.  As to the original post. Yes it would be nice if people wouldn't just reply with Thanks. But then some feel that they need to make some kind of post. There is an extension to the forum software that enables user to "thank" a user without a reply. The number of "Thanks" for the thread and for the user in sum is displayed in the uer profile: Thanks: 428 Thanked 1.472 Times in 488 Posts  I think that I don't like it...  Andreas
Hans Roggen Posted March 12, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted March 12, 2007 Sometimes saying 'thanks' when sombody puts in al lot of time and effort to get answers or solutions to problems is a decent and polite thing to do. I don't see much harm in that. (yes, it was me who thanked Guy and I don't remember many other posts of mine with just that answer) What does irritate me every now and then is people quoting text and pictures right beneath the original post. Hans  Again I say you really don't know that your post will be just below the one you are replying to. Like this reply to Hans. If during the typing of it someone else replies to either Hans post or some other post in the thread my reply could 1-2-3-4-5-6 posts down. Or even while I'm reading the thread and someone else posts it does not show on my screen until I either refresh or post and go back to the thread. Quoting is the best way to show which post you are replying to. But yes CUT OUT the image parts of the Quote.
wparsonsgisnet Posted March 13, 2007 Share #12 Â Posted March 13, 2007 To be honest, I don't find much to dislike in this forum. Â The software is terrific, the search function is helpful, and the speed is more than adequate. Â Speed reading sometimes helps, but if we relied on auto filters for spam, we'd miss some real incoming mail.
