X2 and DNG versus JPG quality differences

Since a week I am shooting with my new Leica X2 and made around 1000 shots.

I was always a RAW/DNG shooter and continued the same.

However I found that with the X2, the DNG's are not sharp, but the JPG's are really tack sharp.

On the contrary the DNG's give me much better color rendering, lighting and are much deeper than the JPG's

I do not understand why there are such big difference between the DNGs and JPGs

Anybody any thoughts/experiences? Or am I missing something?

Thank you,

Frans Kemper

the jpg's have been processed the DNG's have not . You have to do that yourself in lightroom or your software of choice, think of them as negatives out of the camera and have to be processed in the darkroom. Jpgs, on the oither hand are like getting your photos in an envelope from the drugstore.

Hi Frans,

As Andy has stated, the DNG file is the full data that was captured that you have to process to get the results you desire. You can influence the JPEG engine via the in camera contrast, sharpness and saturation parameters but the DNG file gives you the full control of the parameters. The default DNG responds very well to an increase in sharpness levels and provides a lot of latitude in the highlights and shadows in scenes that span many EVs.

I remember reading this thread a while ago. I process raw... didn't think that much about it. Just for fun, yesterday I downloaded the Jpegs from my X2 that I take as backups and compared to some of my adjusted raw. Saw exactly the same difference the creator of this tread noticed. A big difference in sharpness and color between the two. I always assumed that the Raw pulls through the raw data with the processor adjustments... but clearly not. So, is there posted somewhere the LR4 presets that correspond to the Leica adjustment for JPG? I personally would like to start with how the JPG is adjusted with the raw and then adjust from there. Cuz, honestly I don't know what they did to get the photo that sharp, but would like to start there and increase the color.

If anyone knows. Is this different than other cameras? I have a Nikon D800 and Fuji XE-1 and if I need to deal with this with all cameras, I guess I better know earlier versus later. JD

That's a good question JD. I would also like to know the presets, if there are any. I shoot my X2 JPG+RAW and 99% of the time I go with the JPG. Especially if I'm after a B&W image. I go back and forth between Aperture 3 and Lightroom, but I can't quite get them to look as good as the JPGs the X2 cranks out. In all fairness, I'm far from skilled at post processing. I endeavor to do as little of it as possible to be honest. With practice - who knows. I sure feel, however, that whatever this little camera does to make a JPG is impressive.

Jeff, Glad I am not alone on this, I was afraid I had nodded off during digital photo 101 somewhere. I shoot under very low light conditions, high contrast and with zillions of colors of green (I photograph out doors in the Pacific Northwest), so I run all though my workflow. I don't mind, but adjusting a JPG when you have the raw makes no sense, so I am looking forward to figuring out the trick. Since Leica distributes Lightroom with there cameras, I would think there is some synergy here. JD

I decided to start doing some research. Found we are not alone, this person has exactly the same idea I was getting at. Not that easy.

And following this link you turn into Like-alook a small company that might have unveiled the secrets of "the Leica look". Presets for LR - you might buy the whole pro package or you can try with the free 4 B&W presets.

Is this part of an answer to topic of the tread ?

Does anyone have experience they want to share?

I bought all the LeicaLook per-sets... $20. They are very interesting. I'm going to have to spend some time comparing on one screen the raw with applied LeicaLook preset and on the right screen the jpg produced by my camera to see which one matches my X 2 and see what that that tells me. JD

Based on this thread, I just downloaded the Leica Look Alike presets for $20. I only played around with it for about 10 minutes, and I'm pretty impressed. Especially since my LR skills are so limited. Definitely worth the money IMHO.
