Robert Seeney Posted August 3, 2012 Share #1  Posted August 3, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello everyone  Just watching some videos of Bruce gilden and he seems to have an external viewfinder and a flash attached (with the flash off camera via cord) the video didn't focus closely enough for me to work out how he was doing this - any ideas or am I just imagining it? ayewing Posted August 3, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted August 3, 2012 You can get a flash cord with a hot shoe socket on top of the connecter that fits into the hot shoe of the camera so the external viewfinder could be fitted on top of the flash connecter though I think it would cause some vertical parallax error. algrove Posted August 3, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted August 3, 2012 Based on an article by Sean Reid regarding the use of off camera flash on the M9 I purchased a Nikon 1+ meter flash sync cord that in fact does have a hot shoe on the top of it. Iam on a trip right now without the cord but it might have been the Nikon 19. Just not sure, but it works. Check some threads here since many have quoted the exact Nikon part in them. The only one on a Leica M8 or M9 is the accessory shoe – which is needed for the accessory finder. In any case, Sean Reid speaks expressly about using a synch cord.  Does Sean use flash with anything wider than 28mm? I think not, and in that case, the camera's built-in finder is enough.  I am using the Nissin SC 001 cord, which works well, including with bounce flash. In that case, you can use lenses down to 18mm, maybe even shorter. budrichard Posted August 4, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted August 4, 2012 The video I saw in HD clearly showed an M7 with motor M, it may have been an MP with angle rewind or an M6. The flash synch cord was clearly attached. From the shape of the lens hood it may have been a 21 or 24mm. Thier is no commercially manufactured double hot shoe. I use an M6 or M7 with Metz handle flash attached to the base plate with a 21mm f2.8ASPH. It is a cumbersome unit but works well with the Metz in AUTO because there is no TTL flash using the synch port. But the secondary connection is a two-pole PC one only. The only thing it can do is to trigger the flash. And besides, that is all a radio release can do, too. budrichard Posted August 4, 2012 Share #18 Â Posted August 4, 2012 I use M6 and M7 and believe me I have tried to find the best way to use my 21mm f2.8 ASPH with flash. It cannot be done using TTL flash, no one makes a double hot shoe and no one makes a double hot shoe that passes through the TTL information. Once the 21mm Finder is mounted, the TTL flash is not available. There is synch socket on the M's but that is not TTL flash. The best I could do is a Metz handle unit that mounted to a bracket to attach under the M camera. since it didn't matter M6 or M7, I set up my M6 that way with the proper 3502 adaper but that really doesn't matter unless I take the head off the Metz and mount on the hotshoe then for TTL flash one needs the proper 3502 of which there are a few versions. So if anyone actually uses a 21mm with finder and a flash synched to the hotshoe, I would like to know how. If you don't use a WA, Aux viewfinder and M camera with flash and are Posting what you THINK will work, thanks for your idea but they aren't feasible.
