Right,

Here we go.

_________________________________________________________

Rules:

The Barnack Challenge runs four times a year, on or about the start of each season.

It is open to all Leica User Forum members.

In order to participate you must shoot a roll of film in line with a predefined theme within a defined seven day period using a Screwmount or early fixed-lens Leica. You may use any lens, regardless of age or manufacturer, as long as it is LTM.

Select your shot that in your view best matches the theme and post it onto a single thread set up for the purpose by the organiser. Post-processing of your image should be kept to a minimum - nothing that couldn't be done in a wet darkroom fifty years ago. You may post your image any size within forum rules.

The thread will be open for postings but NOT for voting for seven days from a declared date to allow all entries to be posted before voting starts. Your entries are not anonymous; feel free to post camera, lens and film details.

Voting will then be opened. Votes may then be cast on the following basis:

Three points for best, two points for second and one point for third.

Voting runs for two weeks. One vote per member, no voting for your own image.

The winner gets the right to set the theme for the next Barnack Challenge.

_________________________________________________________

Theme and Dates:

The theme for the first Barnack Challenge is "Faith"

The open period runs from the 21st to the 28th of March inclusive.

You must post your images by the 4th of April. Voting will then open and run until the 18th April.

If Bill has set up this challenge the same way as The One Challenge, then a Leica screw lens on that old Kiev in your loft would still count, as it would do for any posting on this forum. However, it is worded more along the lines of the body being paramount, the lens less so.

Maybe Bill can clarify?

To clarify.

Andy is absolutely right, The One Challenge allows Leica bodies or glass, but this is different.

The Barnack Challenge is, first and foremost, to celebrate the Barnack Leicas; their jewel-like precision, their solidity and their almost cockroach-like survivability.

It's about encouraging those with Screwmount Leicas to use them instead of just looking and fondling. It's about rediscovering the joys of a compact form factor, elegant engineering and battery independence. It's about discretion, the decisive moment, contemplation and execution. It's about anticipation instead of chimping. About developing instead of uploading. Just for once, it is about the body, not the glass.

So, if you want to stick a Jupiter-3 on the front of your IIIg it's your choice, whether you are doing that because it is the only LTM lens you own, or because you have deliberately selected it to give you the image character you want to achieve your desired result.

Regards,

Bill

I watched 'Five Fingers' with James Mason last night; look at the ease of use of his LTM when he whips it out of his inside pocket to photograph secret documents! Not to worry that the documents photographed in a landscape format appear as portrait in the negatives, it's only a film... But he makes sure to check the aperture on the front of his collapsible lens every time. Neat.

Just a thought but is a closing date of April 4th a bit tight if someone is shooting slide film on the 28th and they have to send it off to be processed ?

Hear, hear!

Good point, Robert.

Everything moves to the right by one week, ok?

Closing date is 4th April, post images by the 11th, voting until the 25th.

Two move to the right, one should stay where it is - closing 28th March, post images by 11th voting to 25th ?

Otherwise you've still only got 7 days from close to get your stuff back, scan and print if you take a picture on 11th

Having said that (as long as everyone knows) maybe the longer competition run and fast finish is better

You can tell I'm not concentrating!

What Robert said.

Closing 28th March, post Images by 11th April, Voting to 25th April.

Sorry all! I shall go and stand in the corner and burn a roll of film through a Canon in atonement.

Regards,

Bill
