ChrisC Posted March 11, 2007 Share #2 Posted March 11, 2007 Tristan - The subject has been dealt with many times on the forum, and you would be well served by doing a couple of simple forum 'Searches' on the subject of viewfinders. There are a lot of experienced views on the subject for you to draw on. ................Chris
sean_reid Posted March 11, 2007 Share #3 Posted March 11, 2007 As you search for past threads, keep in mind that a 28 finder is what's needed.

The M8 has frame lines for the 24mm lens. If you use a 21mm lens on a M8 you need a 28mm external viewfinder because of the 1.33 crop factor of the M8. 21mm X 1.33 = 27.93 (28). I find the 24 the right lens for most wide shots and since the 21 is only 3mm wider and costs more and needs a external viewer I put that purchase after all others. stunsworth Posted March 11, 2007 Share #5 Posted March 11, 2007 And also bear in mind that Voigtlander make a very nice metal 28mm viewfinder if you don't want to pay Leica prices.

Sean I am interested in your experience and perspective on this. I have found that the external viewfinders are both optimized for the closer distances and are very conservative(similar to the M8 viewfinder) . I can use a Leica or Zeiss 28mm and get almost the exact coverage of my 24mm lens at infinity. I guess I have become used to the SLR framing but I like to see the image framed the way I saw it in the finder . In both the Leica and Zeiss finders you have some image beyond the frame..I am sure its a matter of familarity and taste ..but this would change the external finder strategy for some users.. gravastar Posted March 11, 2007 Share #9 Posted March 11, 2007 The metal CV 28 mm finder is rather nice. It's also available in black, which is what I use with the 21mm. Bob.
