wes woolard Posted July 25, 2012 Share #1 Posted July 25, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I am new to the forum and have just received a new black MP with the standard covering. It has two areas where there appears to be an air bubble under the covering. I tried pressing one down and it seems to stick for the time being. My question is if this is common or if anyone else has had this issue. I don't like to be overly critical as I know they are all handmade and it is cosmetic in nature, but it was a bit disconcerting to see in a new camera at this level. andybarton Posted July 25, 2012 Share #2 Posted July 25, 2012 Welcome to the Forum. The covering shouldn't have any air bubbles, so sent it back and Leica will correct the mistake. A brand new £3,500 camera should arrive in your hands in perfect condition.

peter_n Posted July 26, 2012 Share #4 Posted July 26, 2012 Welcome to the forum Wes, and let us know if the new one is OK. My experience of Leica after-sales has been excellent and worth the cost of buying new. Enjoy your new MP - a wonderful camera!

"A bit disconcerting" might just be construed as understatement, given the price of a new MP... Yes the fault is cosmetic but it should just not happen and I trust that your dealer and Leica will provide you with a replacement that is everything it should have been in the first place. As an aside I received my MP ALC (black saddle leather, 0.58 VF) two weeks ago and it is everything I had expected, as hopefully yours will also be. Rangefinder08 Posted July 29, 2012 Share #8 Posted July 29, 2012 Just curious where you found the air bubbles. I found a small air bubble under the cover on my new MP (shipped to Texas from NY) next to the frame selector button and wondered if I should return it to Leica in Germany for cover replacement. My fear, however, was that the camera would risk other possible damage from the trip so I did not send it back. Some months later I looked at my mom's 30 year old M6 and noticed she had an air bubble in the identical location! I am still debating whether or not to ship my MP back now, and may just wait for a CLA to have a new cover installed.
wes woolard Posted July 30, 2012 Author Share #9 Posted July 30, 2012 Mine has a bubble next to the frame selector and a larger one next to the battery compartment. Good luck in whatever you decide.
aesop Posted July 30, 2012 Share #10 Posted July 30, 2012 ...I would have stuck a very sharp pin in the bubble and instantly resolved what I deem to be a purely cosmetic issue.
earleygallery Posted July 31, 2012 Share #11 Posted July 31, 2012 If I was buying a new MP I'd want it to be perfect out of the box. Leicas QC in recent years just isn't good enough. Minor issues yes, but they shouldn't happen.
Scarlet Posted July 31, 2012 Share #12 Posted July 31, 2012 Which is the "standard covering", is the one that looks like fine-grained vulcanite on this page?
wattsy Posted July 31, 2012 Share #13 Posted July 31, 2012 Which is the "standard covering", is the one that looks like fine-grained vulcanite on this page? Yes, that's the one. Sometimes referred to as the sharkskin or bathmat covering.
