So my question. "Is Photography an enjoyable process and a part of your being, or do you regard it as a tool and a means to produce a finished result?"

It is all of that. Enjoyable process, part of your being, means to produce a finished result, career, hobby, lifestyle, etc. Photography is many things and there are many, many kinds of photographers. It is much like the music world where there are many kinds of musicians.

Face it, we are all machine operators. It's not what you use, it's the intent and skill with which you use it.

 

Good for some folks to keep in mind before they mindlessly criticize cameras like the M8 / M8.2.

The photographer the OP refers to most likely works for a company who stipulate exactly how he should arrange the set, lighting etc. and the type of prints produced.

 

It's a formulaic approach - like a franchise. I've seen adverts for such positions, they generally state that knowledge of photography is not required/full training given (they probably prefer people who aren't keen photographers, they'll be easier to train to the house style).

 

But whatever, he's still a photographer!

I had the opportunity to train some entry level people for such a position for cruse ship photographer. Every detail was specified by the company, lighting, camera settings, poses, etc. I had to keep my creative urges in check while I trained these new-bees. I hope I did them justice... I sure did not train photographers.

Brief instruction for cat pictures:

 

- take cat by force or seduction (i.e. food)

- immobilize somehow

- wait for the animal to look happy

- choose the right lense, only a M8c body is suitable for this obviously

- click

- post in nature and wildlife for all our enjoyment.

 

I think this convoluted process ranks me as a photographer.
