La Morte Posted July 17, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted July 17, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had a light fall in Dubrovnik last week. Unfortunately the lens hood of my 50 mm Lux got a bump! The lens seems to work perfectly well, but the lens-hood got a dent. It can no longer retract so that the lens cap fit on. Here in South Africa they gave me a lead time for it to be send to Solms of 14 weeks! (Maybe they are sending it via rowboat) Can anyone pls tell me if I should contact them first via e-mail and the courier it over myself and how long ,etc will the whole painful repair process take because I cannot/would not wait 14 weeks? I am sure it I do it myself it cant take that long, can it?? Â Streamlight Photography
jaapv Posted July 17, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted July 17, 2012 Just call/email Customer Service in Solms and send it in with UPS or Fedex or similar. That way you can even apply for express service, if you are willing to pay the cost. The problem with the regular channel is that they tend to group the repairs, so it may be that it lies on the shelf in SA for weeks until they have collected enough to fill a box. michali Posted July 17, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted July 17, 2012 I had a similar situation when I lived in Johannesburg, the tripod with M9 attached got knocked over and the range finder went out of alignment. Â I contacted Solms, booked the camera in for repair & express service as suggested by Jaap, and shipped it via courier to Germany, the whole process took 2 weeks. Â However 2 very important things you have to do. 1. Prepare a letter to SA customs with your ID number and lens serial number and declared value for re-importation purposes. If you don't do this they will charge you full import duty into SA when the lens comes back. Â Send me a PM and I'll email you the sample letter I sent to customs. Â 2. Make sure that the courier company you use to send the lens out to Germany is the same one that Leica uses to send it back. As far as I recall Leica uses UPS & DHL, check this with them. Â I had complications as I sent the lens out via Fedex and it came back via UPS which caused me headaches as the customs letter for re-importation was registered with Fedex and not UPS, it eventually got sorted out but was a huge pain in the backside. Â Before you do all of this I might also suggest that you contact Roger Vieren in JHB who is a Leica specialist. He's in his late seventies and retired. However he still does amazing work on an adhoc basis, he's looked after my Leica gear since 1975 and he has repaired lens hoods for me before. Â Send me a PM and I'll send you his details as well, it's worth a try.
