Metering Memory-Lock

Can someone explain this a little bit more better than the manual? I have tried to use the memory-lock but can't seam to grasp memory lock then move the camera to subject then get sharp focus then shoot. Maybe I am doing it wrong, but I am trying to do it like the manual says - just can't figure it out.

I would like to see a silhouette done in spot metering. If you know the way to do it using the memory lock feature I would love to see how you do it. I just can't figure it out.

Thanks and sorry if this seams like a silly question. I just like to know more about this memory lock on metering.

Thanks,

Sam

Sam,

I read that part of the manual too and was a little stumped. I think metering and focusing are always coupled. So yeah, you can lock metering and focusing on one subject, recompose, then shoot. But I don't think you can decouple metering and focusing.

I basically use manual exposure to decouple metering from focus, and this is largely because it's faster than either manual focus (for me) or, if it is even possible, meter, lock, focus and recompose.

I think your right on the metering and focusing being coupled. Thats my biggest wonder and curiosity. I point at the skyline to get my metering correct and then move the camera to my subject and although it may be a dark subject now - the focus is not focused on my subject. Thats where I am getting confused here. How is it considered memory lock on exposure when its really coupled together and your focused on the skyline and not your subject. LOL. I just don't get it. Granted the subject is black and most is really not a big issue because of the subject being black or basically a silhouette - still i thought with the wording as "Metering Memory-Lock" thats the metering is locked and then you can go and reposition the camera and focus and shoot. I guess its not possible to do that. But what I am now confused about is why call it "Metering Memory-Lock" unless it has Alzheimer's memory. LOL.

Oh well...anywho if anyone figures this out...i would sure be grateful to ya.

Thanks etherfarm for your comment and suggestions.

Hi Sam,

The only way to lock focus/exposure independently from each other is to use manual focus and/or manual exposure.

if you take a meter reading then fix the shutter speed (or ISO, aperture) to get the correct exposure you can reframe and focus quite quickly.

As above, but I did discover you can "slightly" decouple the two.

Firstly by holding the delete/focus button for 2 sec until the red arrows appear you can move both the metering point e.g. spot, and the focus point together using the four buttons within the large ring.

Then change the focus mode to 11 point and again hold the button for 2 sec. You can bias the focus points (L, R, up, down) but the metering point will revert to the center. Focus on the edge, Meter in the center. Just a thought.

Doesn't really qualify for a lock mode though. :-(

Problem with this is - is that once you have the metering locked on the spot and then when you go 11 point you loose the whole metering that you had. But I can say one thing - I didn't know you could move the points around...which is a nice feature. I like that feature a lot!!

Thanks,

Sam
