LX 5 or Digilux 2 ... Should I go back in years?

To the OP, what did you decide?

I just bought a Digilux 2, hoping it's a good decision! Arrives next week. I returned a Fuji x100 a couple of day ago (the battery wouldn't charge, for $1200 US new, it needs to work out of the box!), then was faced with the decision of what to get. I have a Nikon D200 that's enomous, and just really miss the feel of a real camera. I almost went with the LX4; it seemed the most practical. But my heart won out and I went with the Digilux. I googled digital camera analog controls viewfinder, and the Digilux and R-D1 are the only cameras that came up. I am hoping the Digilux will be my walk-about camera.

Laura, Welcome to the Forum and to Digilux 2 ownership. I am sure you will love the analogue controls and the results from a fabulous lens. While the D2 is old, in technology terms, with sensible care it will give you enormous pleasure and rewarding results in your digital photography.

Hello,

I have been looking and reading a lot of the digilux 2. So far I started taking pictures with my panasonic lx5 but I have one major problem with it. I just cant get the feeling without the manuel controls and the missing viewfinder (I know I can get an additional one).

So I would like to have your honest recommendation LX 5 or a used digilux 2. I would sell my lx 5 set and get a used digilux 2.

I dont print out large posters with my cam. And I am just at the beginning of photography but I wanted to learn manuel controls and not relay on auto settings.

Thank you very much

Hello,

if you already using an LX5 I would recommend the digilux 2. Sure with that cam you will get the right feeling of manual options while using it

Do not sell the LX5. It is a great camera for everytime with you. The D2 is a littel big, IMHO it is not a compact camera. So you might regret the selling of your LX5. I own both - a D-Lux 5 and a D2 (and since a few weeks for superzoom a V-Lux 1). And there is a use for all of them, with special "best" situations depending what you want to do with.

When you buy a used Digilux 2, make sure the sensor is replaced!

If you are unsure about Digilux 2, check this:

leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Sites - Leica Digilux 2 sample photos and tests (as well as Panasonic DMC-LC1) - Page 1 of 3

and download this:

one of the best guide I know, Thanks to Thorsten.

Greetings

Thomas

I am a "retired" pro who spent his years with Leica Ms and a variety of Nikons ending with the F4. All film. And then a Contax G2-- loved the functions. But let's face it--- film-- at least 35mm- has limitations, just as the D2 has limitations. And what are they?

For high quality prints-- 11x14. That means that for any professional use (which is almost always 4-color (300dpi or 8.6x6.8 inches or webpage-- screen res) it really has no real-world limitations. ISO? Underexpose one stop and compensate (depending on subject matter) to get 800. Or spring $30 with case for a Dolica tripod <http://www.adorama.com/DOAX620B100.html> The joys of Photoshop or Lightroom!

So in actuality there are no constraints-- especially with such nice looking JPEGs. If size and convenience is an issue-- pull out the iPhone 4 with 5MP resolution (!) and snap away. And guess what-- it easily fits in the pocket and the pics look VERY good. (Can't say that about the iPhone 3 tho.)

I thrashed this out myself until the iPhone 4 made the later model D-Lux superfluous. And since you've had your D2 a while now--- what do you think?
