dennersten Posted July 14, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted July 14, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am preparing a small car vacation through Europe, one idea is to pass Solms. There are very little information at Leicas homepage. Seems to be an exhibition? I have seen articles about a museum. But where can i find info about that? Â Is it worthwhile to go there? Â I have two cameras which need repairs and CLA. could i bring them and talk to somebody there?
Advertisement Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 Hi dennersten, Take a look here Leica Solms. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted July 14, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted July 14, 2012 You can normally arrange a tour of the factory in advance, but in the run up to Photokina, I believe that offer is closed. There is a small shop and exhibition there. Â Customer services are across town in a different facility. You could leave your cameras there but they probably won't fix them on the spot. Â Wetzlar is a much more interesting town and is only a few km away
jaapv Posted July 14, 2012 Share #3  Posted July 14, 2012 Yes, you can drop off the cameras at customer service. Better to contact them first. The main building is a few km away and has a small museum, some photographs on display and a shop. You can book a factory tour. You can contact them through the e-mail addresses on their website or by telephone.  All information is on their website   Leica Camera AG - Leica Plant Germany
spylaw4 Posted July 14, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted July 14, 2012 IIRC a few years ago they did do an over-weekend fix (an upgrade to an M8 + calibrate I think) by arrangement, but there were special circumstances. I suggest emailing Customer Service and asking very nicely, but it would certainly not be an instant job, and would probably attract the speedy service fee.. jaapv Posted July 14, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted July 14, 2012 If you are looking for a comfortable hotel in the neighborhood, the one at the Hessenpark springs to mind, as it is in the middle of a rather nice open air museum.
ophyls Posted July 16, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted July 16, 2012 I stayed at the Wetzlarerhof Hotel in Wetzlar as my base for the two nights I visited Solms recently. Things worth seeing are the Optics museum in Wetzlar, the microsope collection near the LeicaFacility in Wetzlar and of course walking around the Cathedral and the river. Â Solms itself is only about 10-15min away by car and the Leica factory is worth a visit if only to see where our cameras and lenses come from...they have a display of cameras from days gone by but be warned...if you want to buy a souvenir in the store...they have stock of ...almost nothing! I just could not find anything worth buying there... Â The Service Facility is about 5 minutes drive away from the factory and there is a nice lady there who facilitated my request for lens calibration and sensor cleaning..all done the same day but I have to say the sensor cleaning was not v thorough and there were still spots seen at my next shoot...by which time I had left Germany already...the Singapore Leica service centre did a munch better cleaning job! Â You can also visit the new upcoming site for the new factory at Leitz Park in Wetzlar... Â Enjoy your visit..well worth doing!
Aperture 2 Posted July 16, 2012 Share #7 Â Posted July 16, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I visited the plant in February, but asked weeks in advance. It could be that close to photokina you will not be able to visit it. At the entrance you can visit the shop were all the lenses are available ! On the way out they might guive you a nice Leica pin. No pictures are allowed in the plant.
01af Posted July 16, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted July 16, 2012 At the entrance you can visit the shop were all the lenses are available! No, they're not. Many of the lenses you saw were mock-ups.
