Bill, Do you have a M9/M9-P?

Is it possible that this firmware might not be for M9/M9-P (perhaps M9 Ti)?

I have the M9. This file definitely works.

If you're having a problem,

1. Make sure your battery is charged.

2. Format an SD card.

3. Download the file to the card (it may be that your card reader is problematic).

4. Starting with the camera OFF, insert the card and turn on the camera. It will prompt you.

I did go from 1.176 to 1.162.

Regards,

If you are in a situation where a fast and large buffer is needed a DSLR is the better tool anyway imho.

Why's that? Is having a small one:eek: a prerequisite for being an "Oh, I'm so discerning" Leica M photographer?

Make sure it id the unzipped .upd file.

And read this post from the FAQ if you are on mac:

Yes, it's the upd file. I am on a PC with a built in SD card reader. The camera recognizes the firmware 1.162 on the card and prompts with with the question to upgrade. When I choose yes, the upgrade fails.

Was M9P ever shipped originally with 1.162? If not then could it be there's something in the code that prevents 1.162 from loading on a "P"? So far both guys with a "P" have been unable to downgrade...has anyone loaded 1.162 on a "'P" successfully? I mean, you can't load M8 firmware on an M9 or vice-versa, so obviously the firmware is written so it "looks for" the correct camera. If 1.162 doesn't have M9P recognition in it, that would explain.

Perhaps the file you're using is corrupt. You might want to try another download.

The size unzipped of the .upd file (shown in Windows explorer, right click 'properties') should be 8.59 MB (9,018,156 bytes) - the zipped size is 7.13 MB (7,477,949 bytes). Stated here the regular size, not the 'size on disk'.

Or your card is shifted to 'write protect'? The camera wants to delete the file at some point, perhaps also unpack some stuff on the card. That might be a problem in the beginning of the process (seems unlikely if you have just written the .upd file on it).

Or the digital M's have some hardcoding going on and don't allow downgrading if they were factory set to a certain 'lowest' firmware (that's just a guess and also seems a bit unlikely, but who knows... assuming you're on 1.176, you might want to try 1.174, see if that one also fails...)

Makes perfect sense.

I vote for this one if the P crowd keeps failing...

This makes sens.

I installed the beta version of 1.196 on my M9.

Then, reading these posts, decided to try 1.162. It installed without any problems. I have since re=installed 1.196, once again without problems.

I did not notice a huge difference in buffer speed, but then, I don;t need that speed.

Yes it was. I have an M9P that was shipped with 1.162. Leica recently upgraded the firmware to 1.176 during a sensor clean...

I just successfully downgraded the firmware back to 1.162! No issue at all (I did use a PC to transfer the firmware to SD, didn't want to risk my MacOS putting it's hidden .trash folder onto the SD :D)

Thanks yadillah and anupmc.

Well, I am at a complete loss. It works on some M9-Ps but not on mine and another one I know of. I can go back and forth between 1.176 and 1.196 but cannot downgrade to 1.162. I give up.

If common sense is discerning, yes.

If a buffer is large, it will only fill up after a larger number of shots, giving more shots before the camera slows down due to limitations in processing and writing speed.

At present, the one on the digital M is quite small, so if you need to use a camera that remains fast after seven shots you do indeed need to look elsewhere.

To the discerning and elitist Leica M way of thinking that is a rather plebeian horses for courses approach, of course.

Me to, does not work, it seems to be a M9/M9-P issue, because my wife's M9 went along fine, but my M9-P does not....

I prefer the Leica M3 Double Stroke.

The M9 can write to the SD card faster than I can advance film. Means I do not have to change my shooting style.

It's a feature NOT a flaw...

Does it really take 2 seconds to cock the M3 shutter?

I understand that one can have an M3 converted to single stoke operation.
