Hi guys, please find a test shot shot at ISO400 1/2000 f/5.6 today from my 5 day old X2. This was processed with RAW Developer with no adjustments. It seems really noisy. Have any other users out there got the same issues?

Please see the attached 100% crop. The detail is great - you can really see and sharpen up the tile joint lines on the facade. But the noise!

Here are two more images, the first one with some processing to reduce the noise and the second image was shot at ISO1250. BTW the camera is running 1.1 firmware.

So you are looking at a two and a half meter wide print from 30 cm distant here. Any digital camera will show some noise then, most less pleasing then here. Assuming you are shooting raw it is just a matter of tweaking the noise control sliders a notch.

The amount of denoising in the camera will control the amount of noise you will see on your file. Leica will always go for maximum detail and leave it to the user.

Jaap, Thanks for your reply. I do understand that it is 'pixel peeping'. Aside from the noise issue, I love the tonality and sharpness that the X2 has. It has forced me already to go back to my basic technique (prior to fancy IS) such as camera holding, etc. It really has slowed me down and forced me to think. However, maybe I have been spoilt by D700 and OM-D which have excellent noise performance. I am looking at another image, shot at ISO800 and with a bit of work - looks great. I just expected a little better noise performance, and was wondering if this was consistent with the performance of other X2 owners.

Have a look at the photo - I think it looks decent. You can make out the halftone screen pattern of the printing at the focus point.

Versatility. I will be the first to admit I need at least 1/60 to get consistent sharp shots. Having ISO 400 and even 3200 helps capture in different lighting conditions. This was true for me in film, when I had basically three speeds 50, 400 and 3200; shooting mostly with 400.

People here will try to make it your fault obviously, but to me the performance looks not good at all.

davidfung,

I put there a 100% crop of an equivalent picture as yours at 5.6 400 ISO.

I think I have about the same results as you.

You are not showing us the whole picture!! I assume this is a high contrast scene and you are showing us the part that is in the shade...

If your lively-hood depends on shooting scenes like this, then as I said before, it should use your other cameras, or buy one that handles noise better in

the shadows at ISO 400. Good luck!

Warnica - interesting note about the RAW software. I thought with DNG you didn't really need to have custom profiles. But I did try it on Aperture, Capture One Pro, RAW Developer and Lightroom. All had similar base results.

Stark60 - thanks for your snippet. After a nights rest and look at the various images, it doesn't seem that bad. However, the images do need a bit o work to get to a good rating point.

S38 - no I don't shoot for a living; just for fun and memories. All scenes were shot into the sun, so it was high glare. However, that should not affect noise? Surely only contrast, colour, etc
