Odd Suggestion For New Camera

Hi all,

Here's an idea for the guys at Leica, which may just cover a hole in the market. Lets take an excellent compact camera, the Leica CM. Remove the back, and in much the same way as the DMR put a digital back on it. So far nothing exciting or new about the idea.

Well, to keep the costs down and not make new competition for the M8, use the 4/3rds sensor of the Digilux 3, which renders excellent results. Here comes the twist. A few years ago we all used film and did not really need the instant feedback of digital. In MF one used a polaroid back when it was absolutely needed.

Most everyone out there who took photo's in those days knew when they had a "keeper" - I'm sure you know the feeling, you look through the viewfinder, wait, wait, hit the shutter release, and as you do you just know "that's it". If in doubt you braketed your exposure.

Now we take our "new fantasy digital CM", and we don't put a LCD monitor on it. We add no other controls to it except for an on/off switch, and use the current display for remaining frames. If you want to change settings, or view your photo's, you connect the camera to your computer. Now you think this guy is not right in the head.

However, when we had film we could not just change ISO settings, or change to B&W simply. It was slightly more complex in those days (mark off which frame you were on, rewind carefully to leave the film header extened - and if you forgot that you changed mid roll, you ended up with double exposures on a previously used film).

Maybe just a rather silly idea, mind you, I would buy one - a digital CM.

Andreas
