If backup is the aim, there must be dozens of HD based image storage devices. Many have screens that let you at least view the embedded JPEGs, so you can see what transferred. Personally, I'm soon backpacking for 4 months in remote Asia and can't rely on notebooks or internet cafes. I figure I'll need 100+ GB. Cheapest/Safest/Quickest way appears to be two digital storage devices in separate packs.  I take your point about collapsing SD prices though: This week Sandisk Extreme III 2GB just dropped from £50 to £25 and 4GB from £80 to £40 here in the UK.
