Steve66 Posted June 27, 2012 Share #1 Posted June 27, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Due to circumstances I have had to sell my Leica lenses, for now I am holding on to my M8. David at Stephenson's in Manchester gave me a very fair price on the lenses which I had originally purchased from him and pointed me towards a used Voigtlander 35 1.4 Which l have yet to triy on the M8 I'm aware of the issues around this lens but I guess so is David and l presume he would have checked the lens. If I had to ultimatley relinquish my M8 which camera on a budget would be a good recommendation. I would want camera that provides as much manual control as possible and the best crop factor I could reasonably expect. I am bewildered at the options out there ..do not fancy a compact so maybe a dslr? Would really wellcome any input guys. Steve

250swb Posted June 28, 2012 Share #2 Posted June 28, 2012 Ho much, and do you already have any lenses from other cameras that you can use on a DSLR? Steve
Paolo.Battista Posted June 28, 2012 Share #3 Posted June 28, 2012 If you would like to use rangefinder lenses, Ricoh GXR with M module is a very good choice (maybe the best choice). You can try to find a used one, at least for body and EVF. If you're worried about the CV35 f:1,4, try the CV 35 f:2,5 Pancake II (with M mount). It is really a good all around lens. Otherwise look for a used DSLR with a prime lens. For example, a Nikon D200 can be found for a very low price, paired with a 35 f:2 (if you prefer a more film like look) or the 35 f:1,8 (if you prefer a more digital look) is still a great camera at lower ISO (much like the M8). It has a CCD sensor, so it is more similar to M8 as far as the sensor output is concerned. Or you can look at the many used choices in the m4/3 secondhand marketplace. tommy80 Posted June 28, 2012 Share #4 Posted June 28, 2012 Te M8 is a nice piece anyway!
Carduelis Posted June 28, 2012 Share #5 Posted June 28, 2012 Steve, I can vouch for the Ricoh GXR with M module which I am very happy with, but I guess the cost of buying this equipment new with an EVF (£950-£1k) is probably about what you would recoup from relinquishing your M8. The GXR also has a smaller sensor with a 1.5 crop factor as opposed to a 1.3 crop factor on the M8. I have not seen much in the way of used Ricoh GXR M module equipment to date. If you don't mind the weight and size of an SLR, I would recommend a Canon 5D mk 1 which despite its age produces excellent images for me. It has a full frame sensor and with the recent arrival of the mk 3 can now be obtained second hand for very reasonable prices. I would also recommend a used 24-105 f4 Canon L lens which I have found to very sharp and can cover most photographic situations.
Phil U Posted June 28, 2012 Share #6 Posted June 28, 2012 I second that, the 5d mk1 is a great suggestion, i reckon. That sensor produces lovely images. It will also do a great job with some of the cheaper non L primes, and you can pick up the old FD lenses for a song, if your subject is suitable for manual focusing on an SLR. I also agree that the 24-105L is a superb all round lens, although not the cheapest, given the other options.
Steve66 Posted June 30, 2012 Author Share #7 Posted June 30, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thank you for your input guys. I checked out images of the Cannon.. sublime colour full frame but really imo awful b/w, also managed to find one in Manchester ..£500. Ultimately the b/w rendering is a put off for me ...at least in the few shots l viewed. David from Stephenson's kindly loaned me a C/V 35 1.4 classic for a few days ..became quite excited at the prospect fast lens bokeh relatively inexpensive... took some shots and really the results left me feeling quite unmoved. Returned to see David and Ian at the Manchester shop and they encouraged me to spend some time with an Elmar 50 2.8 colapsible....man -o - man-o-man. For similar money as the c/v (vastly different lenses I know) but the image rendering really is a trip to the stars.. and 52 years old!! Below is a shot taken outside Davids shop, not saying its great pic or anything but a couple of shots in from first trying the lens it captured my heart. brianv Posted June 30, 2012 Share #8 Posted June 30, 2012 Looks good to me. The 1950s classic Leica glass are fantastic on Leica Digitals. Collapsible Summicron is my favorite.
