Haggling in Red Dot

As you are new to Leica I would not worry too much about getting your Leica at the best or lowest price.I would make friends with a established dealer who will help you to start of in a positive fashion.A good dealer won't rip you off because he knows that ultimately you will probably return many times over the years.Ivor and Elaine are very fair people and they are not just retailers but Leica enthusiasts.Enjoy your new camera, you will find owning Leica equipment is very satisfying.

Went in today and got a pretty amazing deal on an M6 TTL and an as-new 28mm Elmarit ASPH, all with boxes and papers and a free ever-ready case. The lens still has over a year of the Leica Warranty on it, so I'm very happy. Ivor and Elaine were very nice and accommodating and even threw in a roll of Reala to get me started.

Im still a little clumsy with loading and stuff but im getting there, the TTL is the camera I wanted but couldn't afford, they made it attainable for me! This is one shop I fully intend to use again and again, cannot fault them.

Heres a quick shot of my beloved, I'd easily write more about how seduced I am by it, but I'd rather go out and shoot :)

Thanks all!

(sorry its a terrible instagram shot)

We spotted this post a little late.

As it turns out it is quite apposite to get involved now rather than earlier as it did not influence us on the deal we were able to do for olliegapper.

I am glad that we and the equipment were able to meet his expectations.

Looking forward to seeing some of you on the One Challenge!

Its the 6 month warranty thats really swung it for me, plus the experience of going in-store and sitting down to really handle the gear and make an informed decision.

Cannot wait, been a long time saving and waiting!

No harm in trying your luck.

However, if the camera is described as "unused" when the frame counter clearly shows otherwise, your haggling may be a little more persuasive:

The frame counter not showing "0" could be a result of dry firing when showing the camera to customers. It does not necessarily indicate that the camera has been used.

This is similar to buying a new car. Finding one with an odometer that reads 000000 from the get-go is pretty much an impossibility (with digital odometers, car dealers can reset them to 0 for when the buyer takes delivery of the car, though) .

I would be highly suspicious of a new car with 0 miles on the clock. I expect my new car to have at least been driven once round a track at the factory to make sure that a wheel, or something similar, doesn't fall off.

I am pretty sure that resetting an odometer to zero would be illegal in this country, even if a dealer did it.

If the camera has been removed from it's box and the frame counter is showing 15, then by any definition that camera has been used. If it has been used by the retailer as a demonstrator, it is clearly not 'unused'!

One could assume the description of being 'unused' refers to the overall visual condition. This is not clear. The description is potentially misleading. IMO.

I've bought and traded a few items with Ivan and his team at Red Dot and found them to be extremely professional, knowledgeable, helpful and priced reasonably. I'm hardly their number one customer but I will always go to them (as well as one or two other Leica dealers I know) when I'm after something specific (not just about price - it's also an availability issue).

In my experience down the years, the quality of service offered by a trustworthy and reputable dealer pays dividends.

If, as consumers, we squeeze all the retailer's margin out of every deal, we shouldn't be surprised if the quality of equipment and/or service (after-sale and point of sale) reduces.

Hi, I'm going to be getting my first Leica (a used M6) from Red Dot cameras on wednesday and was wondering how likely I'd be able to haggle and how much I could. I don't want to seem rude or our of place by offering below asking but Im on such a tight budget, even after begging and borrowing.

Anyone had any experience?

Sorry if this has already been covered or if im in the wrong place, still feel very new to the forum.

I have always found Red Dot prices quite reasonable. A lot of what they sell is sold on commission for other owners, so they won't have any leeway there.
