thpeters Posted March 8, 2007 Share #1 Posted March 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) When I have the first day my camera with firmware 1.90 the sensor cleaning works perfect shutter stays open. After upgrading to firmware 1.92 and try to clean the sensor the shutter is not staying open anymore? Is this a new problem or maybe just my M8? Have more people discover this? I like to have some answers from other forum members if it is possible regarding this problem. Theo
Advertisement Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Hi thpeters, Take a look here M8 Censor cleaning. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
gravastar Posted March 8, 2007 Share #2 Posted March 8, 2007 I've installed the new firmware and sensor cleaning works fine, the shutter remaining open until I switch off the camera. I was very pleased to see just how much room there is at the edge of the sensor. You can clean past the "active" edges so any debris left behind at the edges doesn't show on the image. Are you sure the battery is fully charged? As a safety measure the camera may not leave the sensor uncovered unless there is sufficient charge to prevent the shutter closing prematurely. Bob. ken_tanaka Posted March 8, 2007 Share #3 Posted March 8, 2007 I just checked and my M8's sensor cleaning cycle is working fine under firmware 1.092. Hopefully others will check theirs, too, and report here.
Iron Flatline Posted March 8, 2007 Share #4 Posted March 8, 2007 I did the firmware upgrade, and then (for the first time!!) cleaned my sensor. No problem, and I was pleased to find that it was relatively easy. I used the Arctic Butterfly and the VisibleDust swabs and solution, per everyone's suggestion here. thpeters Posted March 8, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted March 8, 2007 Thanks for the advice, I am charging now my battery, maybe that was the problem I hope? Theo
jaapv Posted March 8, 2007 Share #6 Posted March 8, 2007 Just to help beginners, I wrote a little protocol for sensor cleaning, based on the Visible Dust sensor cleaning kit, which comes in a neat pouch. It is based on the consensus on this forum. 1.Blow away dust with a bulb blower, preferably a powerful one like the Rocket Blower. Hold the "mouth" of the camera more or less pointing downwards to avoid the dust resettling on the sensor.NEVER*NEVER use canned air. There is a very real possibility of depositing very hard to remove gunk on the sensor. 2. If this does not help, use the Arctic Butterly sensor brush (included in the kit) 3. If this does not help use the Sensor Swipe + Fluid to wet-clean the sensor (included in the kit) 4. If repeated swiping does not help (nearly unheard of) a professional clean is indicated. Instructions are included in the kit. Always use steps 1 and 2 before 3 to avoid scratchy loose dust when wet cleaning. It is actually not easy to damage a sensor through cleaning. The surface is harder and more scratch-resistant than the average photographic filter. There is another interesting product being developed, which will probably come onto the market within the next few months. It consists of a rubber-stamp like thingy and foam pads with a non-residue leaving adhesive, which will pull the dust off.
Guest WPalank Posted March 8, 2007 Share #7 Posted March 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Theo, I remember from a previous thread that you have to press the shutter button immediately after activating the sensor cleaning cycle. If you putz around, it won't activate. barjohn Posted March 9, 2007 Share #9 Posted March 9, 2007 I have the Arctic Butterfly and the Visible Dust Swabs and Sensor clean and found they would not clean stubborn spots no matter how I tried. Then I switched to the Eclipse fluid and swabs and it really does a much better cleaning job. At least that is my experience in the dry climate of Southern CA. The Sensor Clean fluid seems to leave a residue requiring their anti streaking fluid as a final step. With Eclipse it is one step and easy.
rwfreund Posted March 16, 2007 Share #10 Posted March 16, 2007 I agree with the sensor swabs approach after having trouble with the visible dust fluids and swabs. The Arctic butterfly I bought self destructed in my bag due to weak design. There is a new E2 ethanol based fluid sold to replace the methanol based eclipse. Photographic Solutions recommends E2 for the M8 -bob
marknorton Posted March 16, 2007 Share #11 Posted March 16, 2007 It's important I think not to over-wet the swab, it should be damp across its width, not wet.
