Jfelder2@nyc.rr.com Posted March 8, 2007 Share #1 Posted March 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I realized I have an infrequently occuring problem with my M8. It just came back from the retrofit in Solms, and still has it. Every once in a while, when I go to focus, the rangefinder doesn't work, the square just has a pinkish tinge. Then it eventually works. I always thought it was a trick of the light, and now I realize it's something mechanical. Anybody else have that problem, and/or know what it is? http://www.SnapshotArtifact.org
Advertisement Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Hi Jfelder2@nyc.rr.com, Take a look here Rangefinder problems?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted March 8, 2007 Share #2 Posted March 8, 2007 Are you sure your finger is not blocking the rangefinder window - the one to the right of the M8 as you look at the front of the camera?Perhaps the pinkish tinge will turn slightly brown as you throw off the NYC winter palor and get a sun tan? Guest guy_mancuso Posted March 8, 2007 Share #3 Posted March 8, 2007 James sorry no one told you the rule with buying a M8 we don't talk about it much because it hurts but we cut our middle finger tip off so it does not get in the way when you hold the camera. Yea it only hurts for a minute TRUST me. All kidding aside happens to me all the time also and usually what the issue is. Next time you it see look were your right middle finger is. osera Posted March 8, 2007 Share #4 Posted March 8, 2007 James sorry no one told you the rule with buying a M8 we don't talk about it much because it hurts but we cut our middle finger tip off so it does not get in the way when you hold the camera. Yea it only hurts for a minute TRUST me. Guy, so if I undergo this procedure, can I give you the finger? (tip) Seriously though, I had this problem more using the Leica grip. I now am using Luigi's case with the grip, but it is lower profile and my finger tip does not stray as often.
Hans Roggen Posted March 8, 2007 Share #5 Posted March 8, 2007 I'm almost sure your finger is in front of the rangefinder window. It does get pinkish when you hold it in front but not quite against it. We've all been there It's like getting that damn strap on the right way round. Just got my wide leather strap today and like my finger in front of the rangefinder window it also happened again because i used the rings of the original strap. But i'm slowly getting off-topic Hans
Guest guy_mancuso Posted March 8, 2007 Share #6 Posted March 8, 2007 No Allen just keep it as a M8 token to pass on to the grandkids. LOL
johnwolf Posted March 8, 2007 Share #7 Posted March 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi James, I'm new to the M8 and RF, and I have noticed the same issue on ocassion. I believe in my case it has to do with the angle at which I hold the finder to the eye. In fact you can induce this by rotating the camera right/left or up/down slightly while viewing through the RF. Sorry if I'm being over-simplistic, but could this be your problem? John
Jfelder2@nyc.rr.com Posted March 8, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted March 8, 2007 It WAS my middle finger straying over the bottom of the rangefinder window (totally covering it, just makes the rectangle disappear). I hate making stupid mistakes, but I love being able to replicate a problem and solve it! Thanks everybody! http://www.SnapshotArtifact.org

cnguyen Posted March 8, 2007 Share #10 Posted March 8, 2007 Your fingers will learn to stay away from the three front windows with time. tell tale signs with new RF owners cameras - finger prints on the large window and small window - finger prints on the back viewfinder Enjoy your new M8 ! gravastar Posted March 8, 2007 Share #11 Posted March 8, 2007 Ah yes, fingerprints on the rangefinder windows. The number of times I've wondered why I can't seem to get the split images to snap together or the viewfinder image seems to be slightly blurred. I keep a small piece of well washed chamois leather in a plastic bag with which to clean them. Bob.

Snapshot Artifact Last time somebody discovered and reported a similiar superbug of his M8 in this forum it turned out to be his finger ! The pinkish tinge seems to confirm this diagnosis. Artichoke Posted March 8, 2007 Share #13 Posted March 8, 2007 I prefer having the viewfinder at the top & have adapted a technique in which I use my right thumb to release the shutter, cradling the lens with the fingers of my right hand I use my left hand to focus with it pronated (palm down) so I avoid both blocking both windows this at first seemed odd for me, but now I have gotten used to it & can focus quite accurately & quickly with this technique
