The problem with PayPal is that transactions can be reversed, so you could have the situation where something is delivered, but the recipient claims that it hasn't been, and then reverses the transaction. There are many unscrupulous people out there, looking for any opportunity to deprive you of your stuff and your money.

Getting properly signed-for receipts of delivery of the item is absolutely essential, even when shipping to another country.

The problem with a Bank Transfer is that the purchaser could, conceivably, be in the position where he has paid for a good that never arrives or doesn't even exist.

Both buyer and seller need to be very aware of what they are getting into when buying and selling expensive items across continents.

.

So true. I hoped that my presence here on the forum would add credibility and hence facilitate the sale process of my M8. I sold my M6 millemium here to a very satisfied forum member via bank transfer. A risk for him for sure... but seeing that I had posted images of the camera here and engaged in related dialogue would have definitely given him some confidence. No guarantee of course but better than buying totally unknown.

absolutely agree. I should have joined here a little earlier...

it's not the community, it's the item itself. Digital Ms are very special in terms of shutter (M8) and in terms of sensorcracks (M9).

Both failures happen from one second to another and this mainly is the reason that I never would buy a used digital M. Analogue Ms I got a lot without any failure beside a hazy window of a M4-P. Costs to clean and look for proper function: € 50.

Solms should repair without costs because less expensive competitors guaranty in written form as a minimum 150.000 releases and the 1/4000 sec shutter is already the downgraded version.....

Indeed, I remember Jaap once said there is no difference of shutter failure rate between the 1/8000 and 1/4000, Really something Solms should take it more seriously.

This all comes at a price, of course.

Very little, actually, and the benefit is peace of mind, which is worth a lot...to me anyway. I'd argue it saves me money...with a bit of smart and careful shopping.

I bought a used mint M8.2 a year ago from a good dealer (Dale Photo in the US), and it cost less than other cameras advertised privately as mint, and $1000 less than a similar camera at another dealer (Tamarkin). It pays to shop around as prices vary widely for no rational reason. The dealer, on their own, had just received the camera back from Leica for a minor matter and got the whole camera inspected with a report on the mint condition. A private party wouldn't have bothered.

I insure gear worth approx. $25,000 for just over $300 per year as an itemized rider to my home policy, and it covers all locations and conditions, including my own stupidity, with no deductible, and has an automatic provision for up to 50% appreciation at no additional cost if replacement value increases. I used to spend more than that on film and chemicals in my darkroom days.

I paid a similar amount to ensure my first M8 a few years ago, just for the first year though, although so far my Leica gear hadn't given me much problem, still a peace of mind. Luck is important sometimes, you never know.

Well that's a dead end. It does suck but that is the chance you take not buying from a dealer that gives you a warranty. I know, my M8 shutter faulted about 2 months after I bought it off eBay. I actually got a fault a few days after receiving the camera but I took the battery out and it started working again. As much as it hurts when it does happen I think a 4-6 year lifespan is about normal for these shutters and I think one should always keep that in mind when buying an M8. Doesn't help the sting I know.

What does a shutter replacement cost on an M8? Just wondering...

I agree that one has to shop around and needs some luck as well for the right product to come up. I have not seen such significant price variations over here, neither have I found an insurance with similar conditions. Others might have been more successful.

Try to be philosophical about it. Stuff breaks, I'd give the seller the benefit of the doubt that the camera was fine when it was sent off to you. Hopefully the price was a saving on what you would have paid to a dealer, to offset the repair cost.

At least you have a camera - there have been reports here of people buying via ebay, paying their money and receiving nothing at all!

Once it is fixed you'll have an even better M8 than you were expecting, with a warranty from Leica.
