HV25 Posted June 5, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted June 5, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm considering to buy an M 9 or M 9-P with a 50 mm lens and could do so in the UK but also in Germany as I go there quite frequently. Â Based on the current exchange rate (British Pounds to Euro) the official Leica prices are quite significantly lower in Germany compared to those in the UK. Â Question to those that know about buying gear in Germany: Â Is it possible to negotiate a rebate buying a new M 9 / M 9-P plus lens from a Leica dealer in Germany or is paying the official Leica price the norm ? Â Anything else to be considered when it comes to deciding where to buy ? Â Many thanks - great forum - love it.

holgerf Posted June 5, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted June 5, 2012 Getting rebates at official Leica dealers is rather difficult. Passport warrenty unknown in Germany. Comparing prices take care of VAT (however is normally included in Germany). Â Best Holgeri
HV25 Posted June 5, 2012 Author Share #4  Posted June 5, 2012 Thanks for the feedback.  From my understanding there is a difference in terms of warranty:  In the UK you get a 2 year warranty plus 1 year coverage for malfunction due to accidental damage (Passport scheme) included in the purchase price.  In Germany you get 1 year warranty (only ?) included in the purchase price plus a second year against a fee of 290 €. GMB Posted June 6, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted June 6, 2012 In Germany you get two years warranty for malfunction. Â Only way to find out about rebate is ask the dealer. It may depend on how you pay. If you pay cash, you should be able to get at least 3%.
01af Posted June 6, 2012 Share #7  Posted June 6, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you pay cash, you should be able to get at least 3 %. This used to be true for all Leica Camera products before September, 2009—but isn't anymore. These days you'll have to pay retail prices. Of course, just asking won't hurt, and exceptions to the rule may happen ... but don't be disappointed when not.  In Germany, consumer retail prices include 19 % VAT. Aliens who take home their goods acquired in Germany can reclaim German VAT when leaving Germany. Ask the dealer or the customs personnel about the procedure. But then you'll have to pay your home country's VAT or import taxes.
andybarton Posted June 6, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted June 6, 2012 If you live in any other EU country, you have to pay the VAT at the rate charged in the country where you buy the product. Â You can only reclaim VAT if you live outside of the EU.
duckrider Posted June 6, 2012 Share #9  Posted June 6, 2012 I can't imagine that You'll realise a rebate buying a new M 9 / M 9-P here in Germany, You should be aware to get a camera at all! M9: 5495.- Euro, availiable M9P: 5995.- Euro seemingly not availiable MM: 6800.- Euro, availiable in August....  If You visit Germany, is it possible to bring a Voigtländer 12mm with finder with You? Prices in GB seem to be much lower than here in Germany?  have a nice trip Thomas

Carduelis Posted June 6, 2012 Share #15  Posted June 6, 2012 When investigating British prices for say a Leica M9 did you use search sites (such as camerapricebuster.co,uk) to find the lowest retail prices. If you did, I think you will find that it can be bought new for around £4500 instead of around £5000 from a couple of Leica dealerships. I have also seen used mint M9s from Leica dealerships with a few hundred actuations for around £4000 and they would no doubt give you some sort of guarantee. I have always bought my lenses second hand and I think you will find plenty of mint examples of 50 mm Leica lenses at good prices.

wattsy Posted June 6, 2012 Share #18 Â Posted June 6, 2012 Unless you're VAT rated, and the camera is bought for the business - in that case you won't need to pay German VAT Â Yes, but only if you buy it outside Germany. The intra-EU VAT rule that you mention only applies if the goods are exported from one EU country to another.
