StephenPatterson Posted June 2, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted June 2, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just a brief note to say that I have started a new website/blog called Middle Kingdom Photo to document my experiences in China with my Leica. While I will discuss gear from time to time this site will mainly focus on the people, culture, food, travel and lifestyle of central China and SE Asia. Â My first article is entitled "Please Smoke!!!" and attempts to show how cigarettes can be a great ice breaker for shooting environmental portraits in China. Â Finally if any members are ever planning a trip to China or SE Asia please do not hesitate to contact me, as I will be more than happy to assist in any way that I can. Â Cheers

algrove Posted June 3, 2012 Share #7 Â Posted June 3, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Where is the Indiana Jones leather bull whip? No room in the bag maybe with all that you carry, especially with all the cigarettes you need to have on hand.
StephenPatterson Posted June 3, 2012 Author Share #8 Â Posted June 3, 2012 Lou, please don't make fun of my Dorfman Pacific Hat, which is nothing like the "Indiana Jones" felt fedora. The Outback is waxed canvas and works very well in the pouring rain (which happens a lot in SE Asia) as well as the scorching sun. The brim has a bendable metal ring sewn into the outer edge making it very adjustable, so you can shoot without it getting in the way. It's also completely crushable and can be stuffed in any suitcase or camera bag with no ill effects. Finally it has a chin strap, so I don't have to worry about it as I zip around central China on my motor scooter. Absolutely the best hat I have ever owned. Also my wife hates it (says it makes me look old) so naturally I wear it on every possible occasion just to annoy her. I tried one of those pointy Chinese straw hat things, and also a Mao cap with a red star, but it just wasn't working for me. Â And Rick, thanks for the message. We unique characters have to stick together. Â Cheers,

kokoshawnuff Posted June 3, 2012 Share #11 Â Posted June 3, 2012 Great start Stephen. I would suggest, since this is a 'Leica' website (and therefore somewhat gear oriented), that you show what camera and lens you used for photos in the gallery. That kind of info is interesting--at least for some of us

We unique characters have to stick together.  Cheers,  I am going to bookmark it also, if only to see when the bull whip shows up. Hey, forgot to ask about the permit you have. Is a requirement for foreigners living in China or is it a work permit? Or is it required for all "visitors"?
StephenPatterson Posted June 3, 2012 Author Share #18 Â Posted June 3, 2012 I am going to bookmark it also, if only to see when the bull whip shows up.Hey, forgot to ask about the permit you have. Is a requirement for foreigners living in China or is it a work permit? Â Lou, it's the work permit for foreigners living in China, just like a "Green Card" in America. Â I should have picked up a bull whip on my visit to Mexico in January, as they're the experts in that arena!!! Â In a few weeks I'm going to be visiting Xingping, where Jono Slack took his memorable photos with the prototype M Monochrom, so hopefully I can "make do" with my old M9 and it's Bayer Filtered CCD sensor. A big thank you to Jono for giving me advice on what to see and do in the area, as it's a new part of China for me. A true gentleman and class act!!! Â In the meantime Dragon Boat festival is coming up soon, and so it's time to get busy in the kitchen making Zhong Zi rice dumplings. The last time we tried this my mother in law laughed so hard at my feeble attempts to curl a bamboo frond into a cone (it's probably just a leaf but how often do you get to use the word frond) that I was banished from the production line. This year I've asked once again for access, so stay tuned to see if my press credentials are granted!!! Â Cheers!!!
algrove Posted June 3, 2012 Share #19 Â Posted June 3, 2012 To be banished from the production line means more time for photography/eating/beer/buying for ciggys for the next shoot/Dragon Boat riding/etc.
StephenPatterson Posted June 4, 2012 Author Share #20 Â Posted June 4, 2012 It isn't always about photography at Middle Kingdom Photo, as evidenced by the latest blog post which I've titled: Â "Utilities Infrastructure in the Developing World, or If This is Tuesday then Sorry No Water" Â Middle Kingdom Photo | Blog
