X2 Review Resources

I thought it was a pretty fair review. Just no compelling reason to buy one other than he liked the images. However, they did not appear to be significantly better than X1 and AF is still slower than Fuji which isn't a speed demon.

I love my X2. I've used X1, then X100 and X-pro1. X2's AF speed is comparable to X100 with its latest firmware. That's good enough for me. I'm now a happy X user again! :D By the way, I like the black version more. :p

Hi All,

Thank you for sharing the links.

For me the X1 was all about the image quality in the pocketable physical size. I will be curious to see some decent RAW files so I can ascertain if there is much improvement here as the other improvements are nice to have but they are limited. Is the pixel level detail any better?

Steve Huff has some more comments about the X2 (in a post about the X100). I think his comments are pretty fair, but I am concerned about what he wrote regarding the observation that the X2 is prone to camera shake, and that his "keeper rate" with the X2 is lower than the X100.

I suspect/hope that's related to the higher megapixel count in the new 16mp sensor of the X2, which would require more careful shooting technique than a lower megapixel sensor. Still, it is cause for concern until we see more people posting real world X2 photos. Personally, I do like the X2 color rendition better than the X100, but with adjustable in-camera settings and post-processing, those differences matter less and less, with camera handling becoming the most important factor outside of image quality.

UPDATE: The Fuji X100 is still rocks! | STEVE HUFF PHOTOS

Again, as I have stated above this is all about personal preference. Is the X2 just as capable as the X100? Yes, of course BUT it is different. Different color signature, different in handling and use and well, no video and no hard to see in the sun LCD. It doesn’t have a VF built in and the one you can buy make the camera bulky and odd-looking. It also seems to be prone to the teeniest but of hand shake as many of the shots I snapped with the X2 of Shea (the girl in these photos) had some sort of blur or they were not sharp if the shutter speed was lower than 1/100th. I was able to get sharp images with the X100 and OM-D in the same light where the X2 was giving me unsharp images in some situations. For me, it was a joy to shoot the X100 and OM-D and the X2 was a tad slower and odd without using the EVF. It was also tough to frame in the sunlight without a VF. Other than that the IQ is stunning when you nail it and colors may be the best from the X2 which is no surprise as I preferred the X1 colors to the X100 as well.

Overall The X100 has a more “smooth” laid back kind of feel and the X2 has a more crisp brilliant feel but with that said, I managed more keepers with the X100 this weekend.

Read 'Reid Reviews' - excellent rigorous testing methodology employed. Worth a sub. It's streets ahead of anything else.

Likes the X100 a lot, but dislikes UI that can be firmware improved, though ultimately only new hardware can address the underlying design challenges.

Absolutely adores X1 file quality, but needs to revert to zonal focusing in low light to compensate for slow AF.

Ditto X2, as fast as x100 but with better AF accuracy, but is IQ quite as good?

Worries about post processing X Pro 1 files, and in camera noise smoothing at higher ISOs.

well, what i have learned from all of these reviews is that it takes decent pictures, thats all I need to know. there may be other cameras out there that beat it one way or another but frankly, who cares. close is good enough for me. This will be my first Leica (it arrives this week) so looking forward to using it. I wrote on another thread that I struggled between this and the X100 but it was the simplicity of the X1 that won out, no extras I will never use like making new film stock look like old stock (already have shoeboxes full of thousands of old film stock photos don't need any more thank you very much). a lot of these issues matter on a professional level of course, but as a happy amateur I think a small high quality single focal length decent image creating camera is all i need, but thats just me.

" but I am concerned about what he wrote regarding the observation that the X2 is prone to camera shake, and that his "keeper rate" with the X2 is lower than the X100."

It might be that he has used the X100 a lot more than the X2. he's needs to make a small adjustment and hold the X2 like camera without image stabilization, old school folks may still remember how to do that.

Steve Huff is an admitted Leica "fanboy", and has shot extensively with the M9 (amongst other cameras). So I would imagine his technique for holding the camera would be pretty solid. I'm really hoping he has a faulty camera or something like that.

If you get your X2 in the next day or two, please post your impressions and a few shots. I really want to hear from other regular photographers, not necessarily just the ones that run review sites. Do you know when it's supposed to arrive?

Ah, your right, he would know what to do. well wonder if he was using the led screen and not the EVF vor so e shots, would be harder to keep it steady. Something to test out. Mine arrives on Wednesday. Will do unscientific tests!

I shoot my M3 quite often. I picked up a tip from an OLD (early 1950's) Leica manual a few months back, may be of some benefit to others... When using a neck strap, wrap your right wrist one or two times in the strap so that when you raise the camera to your eye, the strap is taut around your neck/shoulder. This helps me hold it super-steady, even with a 135 on and free standing. I assume this would also work when using the rear screen to frame, although maybe not quite as well.

That guy Steve Huff (camera reviewer) has said the Leica X2 is not as sharp as the Leica X1. Can someone here confirm that statement? Can you take a picture with the X1 and the X2 and put them side by side and confirm the X1 is better in the IQ dept.

I would appreciate this.

I bought a X2 last week. The X2 is pretty good. Go get it.

I initially shared your concerns after reading Steve Huff's review. Happily, I've had no issues with sharpness:

I don't have an X1 to compare with, but I have previously shot with other high quality cameras (5D2, X100, D700), and the sharpness is just as good (or better) with the X2 as with those other cameras. If you want the X2, don't let the concerns about sharpness deter you. I see no evidence in my own shots so far that shows sharpness to be a concern. Image quality is excellent.

Been playing with my new X2 (thanks, David!) for a few hours. Very impressed. And just in time: I can put it through its typical paces--accompanying me on work trips for which I do not bring my M9.

I played with an X1 quite a bit when they came out but didn't feel like it came together as well as it could have. Was tempted again when the new firmware came out but thought I'd wait until the X2.

Frankly, I don't think it matters if you get an x2 or an x100 or an OM-D. The IQ of all of these cameras is good enough for my purposes. I got the X2 because I like Leica products and the way their cameras shape my approach to photography, because I didn't want another "system" camera, and because I wanted something small and simple. I appreciate the authors and their reviews quite a bit, but all the huffing and puffing in the blog comments about what camera is better and how people are stupid for choosing one over another just seems like a bunch of insecure people who need to get out and take some photos and maybe in the process get a life.

For the record, the photos from Ming Thein sealed the deal for me. I don't care about 100% crops or noise at high ISOs (I do shoot an M9, after all). Others care about that stuff and that's fine.

Anyway, off to shoot some more pics. :D
