sdai Posted June 2, 2012 Share #28 Â Posted June 2, 2012 French;) Â Wikipedia says it's a French-Italian company headquatered in Geneva. Its holding company is in fact registered in Amsterdam. Â Is the chip in question an actual design by ST or are they simply contracted as a fab for a design by another company such as Truesense/Kodak? sdai Posted June 3, 2012 Share #32 Â Posted June 3, 2012 I don't mean to question their ability to build a chip but, they are simply unknown in consumer/professional imaging ... which is why I suspected they are only being used as a fab for another fabless sensor designer. Â Leica could claim the sensor it's their own design and pay ST to build the chip. Nothing wrong with it ... just curious to know. :-)
jpattison Posted June 26, 2012 Share #33 Â Posted June 26, 2012 As long as the next M has a decent LCD screen, I'll be happy! Â Why? I don't use mine, except for the occassional ISO change. Â John

-ph- Posted June 26, 2012 Share #35 Â Posted June 26, 2012 One should not underestimate the capabilities of Leica. It is quite possible that they could have large contributions to a new sensor development. Perhaps less in the low-level electronics details - the only one knowing those in and out are the owners of the fab, but in the overall design. Any M sensor will have to deal with the light rays hitting at low angles. Leica probably has the most experience in this matter. The mostly got it worked out for the M9 - the red corners show that it is "mostly" and not completely, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have a good idea how to go around that in the next sensor. sdai Posted June 26, 2012 Share #36 Â Posted June 26, 2012 The M9 sensor was a collaboration between Kodak and Leica. So far we've read from various sources that Leica will continue to work with TrueSense (previously Kodak) on the M series ... I actually think there are chances the next M will still use CCD given the hint from Dr. Kaufmann that there won't be video gimmicks. Â If the French rumor is credible, the ST CMOS sensor will actually be used in the S3.

jaapv Posted June 26, 2012 Share #40 Â Posted June 26, 2012 Well, yes, but the quotes are ambiguous at best. Not only does he claim to have "solved" the video drawbacks, which can only mean CMos, the involvement with Truesense can just as well refer to the Monochrom, and not be applicable to an M10. Just a few weeks left and everybody will be put out of their misery.
