The 2-6-0s with their greater range quickly became a success. Locomotive 46521 was one of the last of the series, built in 1953 in Swindon and allocated to the Western Region... [ATTACH]316555[/ATTACH] and on the footplate, instructions on the driving of a mainline steam engine are being imparted... [ATTACH]316556[/ATTACH] shadows on a rake of waiting coaches... [ATTACH]316559[/ATTACH] if anything looked fit for purpose this does... [ATTACH]316560[/ATTACH] now, which one is the brake... [ATTACH]316561[/ATTACH] gently does it, running round at the Leicester end of the line... [ATTACH]316562[/ATTACH] and now, some careful reversing... [ATTACH]316565[/ATTACH] with the safety valve lifted, 46521 approaches her carriages at the Leicester terminal before running tender first on the return journey to Loughborough... [ATTACH]316566[/ATTACH] the Chief Engineer hard at work, a man held in the highest esteem by his peers... I like the composition of the first picture, the details of the locomotive's cab and the maintenance building. The equipment looks very well preserved. These shots bring back fond memories of the steam locomotive era that I seen as a young boy. Different railroads with different engines but still--- the same. The photographer's obvious devotion and deep interest in his subject are are matched by his ability to illustrate skilfully a wide range of detail here. I particularly like those beautifully lit workshop photographs - I can just smell those machine lubricating oils. An excellent study, David. Ken.
