roydonian Posted May 18, 2012 Share #1 Posted May 18, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) For the UK-based collectors amongst us, it is worth remembering that this Sunday (20 May), the 2012 Photographica fair will be held at the Royal Horticultural Society's Lindley Hall in Vincent Square, Victoria, in central London. The event opens at 10am (admission five pounds) but the hall gets so crowded during the first few hours it is hard to move around, let alone see what is being offered for sale. So I’ll probably get there around 1pm. At 4pm I’ll head to the upstairs café for a well-earned cup of coffee. If any other forum members are there, look for a guy wearing a black hat and with a patch over one eye. Best regards, Doug

roydonian Posted May 19, 2012 Author Share #3 Posted May 19, 2012 I hope to attend so might see you there at coffee time ... together with another Leica Society friend. Are you a PCCI member? I left the LHS when it decided to drop the H. I was a member of the PCCI for about a decade, but my wife was going through heart surgery earlier in the year, so renewing subscriptions was something that 'fell by the wayside'. roydonian Posted June 5, 2012 Author Share #7 Posted June 5, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) It was a very disappointing event. Since the fair was switched to a smaller hall several years ago, the aisles have become very congested, and it’s not until around 1pm that one can more around easily and have a fighting chance of seeing what is being offered for sale. And by 2pm, some dealers are already starting to pack up. My sole purchase was an elderly Leicina. I didn’t see any modern M-series lenses, and would guess that those had been scooped up by the ‘early-bird’ visitors, if not by dealers waiting outside before the hall had opened. I heard one dealer boasting about the amount of business he’d done while waiting to get in. Best regards, Doug

My experience too over the past few - unpleasantly crowded and a bit of sharp practice by some unscrupulous dealers. For example, a couple of years ago a well-known dealer tried to pass a faked Luftwaffe screw mount Leica as genuine until I pointed out the obvious flaws when he claimed ignorance and became aggressive. Who needs that? He definitely knew it was a fake. Another dealer who should have known better tried to sell me a fake chrome 39mm lens cap - from a box of them he kept out of sight under his stall. Far fewer rubies and much more dust these days. Pete.

Last time I attended, two years ago, I witnessed one well known dealer leaving the fair just as I arrived - he had obviously only been there to buy and he had several bags full of items. But that is the name of the game - and all the regular dealers attending know each other and buy and sell to each other - that is their livelihood. Thus best to arrive early yourself and head for the dealers who you know. Bargains can be negotiated at closing time especially when sales have been poor. I witnessed another well known dealer some years ago reducing nearly all his prices by 50% after 2pm. Best wishes dunk
