john_f Posted March 6, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted March 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) FYI Â Learned today that Leica has discontinued the Summilux-M 75mm f1.4, first introduced back in 1980 along with so many other new lenses. Ref: Leica and Rangefinders Forum: M75 F1.4...gone= Â Another great Leitz classic of the 80's that bites the dust. WIth the superb (and very compact) APO-Summicron-M 75mm, it was only a matter of time. Could the (now super expensive) Noctilux be far behind? A new, more "affordable" Noctilux-M Asph maybe ? Â Three more days until PMA 2007 (PMA 2007 Report) Â John F.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted March 6, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted March 6, 2007 Well I just bought the 75 lux and i do love it , so it is a bummer they discontinued it but maybe there is a replacement down the road but the 75 cron is no slouch either. I would also like to here this from Leica which I have not.
sdai Posted March 6, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted March 6, 2007 No surprise here ... this lens never sold well ... at one time I emailed Leica about the possiblity of ordering a M7 with only 35 and 75 framelines and Solms replied that they have more important things to do ... then I turned to a well-known local workshop and was asked ... why would you do that? LOL Â For serious M shooters, the 75 is kind of middle of nowhere ... on the long side, it just won't pull close enough. Most folks into portraiture will pick up a 90 with no doubt. Guest guy_mancuso Posted March 6, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted March 6, 2007 Simon were talking a the M8 now and that focal length is almost a 90mm .I just used it for commercial portraits and I did like that distance and I am normally a 180 f2 guy for these. sdai Posted March 6, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted March 6, 2007 That's true, Guy ... I didn't say I haven't a 75.
ddp Posted March 6, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted March 6, 2007 Too bad really...I've used the lens on occasion, nice results. But my current M setups have no framelines for a 75 anymore! I somehow took myself out of the loop here....always found it to be an odd focal length for me on the M - sort of in limbo.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted March 6, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted March 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) That's true, Guy ... I didn't say I haven't a 75. Â Â LOL Â I do agree though a 75mm on a full frame body would feel kind of strange. I much prefer the 66 with the M8 and 50mm . That one feels better and i do like that 66mm focal length for some reason. I love the 35 lux but not a big fan of 50mm and that is my least used lens. Â The 75mm lens is nice on the M8 , this will be missed

I have both 75s, a VERY nice FL for the M8; the 75/2 is a great traveling companion due to its size. Cheers! Tom

carstenw Posted March 6, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted March 6, 2007 I find this very sad. That is one of just two of the old lenses from Dr. Walter Mandler still left in the lineup, with the old magic. The new ones are fantastic lenses, and I have to repeat how stunning lenses like the 50 Lux Asph are, but the loss of the 75 Lux is very real. I understand that the tooling is worn out, and that the cost to replace it is too high, and would drive the price beyond where it would make sense financially. Thankfully I have just found my copy, which is waiting for me in the store. Â The Noctilux prices have already been projected much higher, which I take as a strong sign that this lens will not disappear. The legend and mystique surronding this lens will keep it alive, I believe. It has, what, three decades behind it, and is truly unique. This lens cannot be removed from the lineup without a replacement.
marknorton Posted March 6, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted March 6, 2007 I ordered one using my second 30%, so it will be interesting to see if they supply it. Â I thnk the writing has been on the wall for this lens for while but I agree it's a pity.
chris_tribble Posted March 6, 2007 Share #12 Â Posted March 6, 2007 Certainly delighted with my old Canadian 75 lux. On the M8 it's an ideal portrait lens for my purposes. I also use the 85 1.2 L (which I also love) on Canon full frames, and I don't see a marked difference between results from both lenses - but the M8 + 75 is SO much easier to carry around! You are probabIy right. but i truley think the Noctilux is a bit overrated these days ..... the lens never was so popular, although the nocti loses part of his character on the M8. If i had to choose just one to keep the Noctilux or the 75 Lux .... i would choose the 75 lux without hesitation. Enjoy the lens!
marknorton Posted March 6, 2007 Share #14 Â Posted March 6, 2007 Still showing on the Leica web-site but then so too is the DMR... wonder if there's anything new up their sleeves for PMA?
Guest guy_mancuso Posted March 6, 2007 Share #15 Â Posted March 6, 2007 Leica is in a 6 hour sales meeting today before the opening of PMA. I am sure they are going to cover all area's of what leica is doing and what they will do , so hopefuly by show start a lot of answers will come out. Â Â Oh and the 75 lux is a out of my dead cold hands lens already. Love it

sdai Posted March 6, 2007 Share #17 Â Posted March 6, 2007 I haven't tried Edmund's profile yet but color looks good from this one, Bill ... with regard to custom "gray" balancing, the background of "this" chat board actually makes a good target.
